Ernest James Borrett was born on 23 February 1879 at St John's Ilketshall, Suffolk, England, United Kingdom. He was the son of George Borrett and Emily Hancey. [1] [2]
On 13 April 1903 Ernest, a bachelor and police constable, married Ada Lizzie Lowe, spinster, at the parish church of St Andrew, Willesden, in London, Middlesex. Ernest was living at 61 Roman Road, Barking and Ada at 112 High Road, Willesden Green. [3]
Fourteen year old Ernest joined the Royal Navy on 16 March 1894 as Boy Second-class on HMS Imgrenable. He rose through the ratings of Ordinary and Able Seaman to Petty Officer in November 1900 and served on several ships until 28 February 1903. [4]
His service record shows that he had some tattoos: bracelet on right wrist, True Love on left forearm, heart and arrow, and flags. He was 5 feet 10 inches tall (about 1.78 metres), had brown hair, brown eyes and a fresh complexion.
After the outbreak of World War I and a break of 12 years, he rejoined the Royal Navy on 31 May 1915 on HMS Pembroke. He continued to serve in the Navy until his demobilisation on 28 January 1919.
He was one of the Men who received the Distinguished Service Medal for services in Monitors and Destroyers of the Dover Patrol in the first half of 1918. [5]
Ernest joined the Metropolitan Police Force on 16 Mach 1903 and served as a Police Constable for 25 years, retiring on a pension at age 49 on 3 June 1928. [6]
He died, aged 70, in 1950 at Fakenham, Norfolk, England. [7]
1881 Residence: Beccles Road, Holy Trinity Bungay, Suffolk, England.
