Abel Boothroyd was born in April, 1838 in Huddersfield, West Riding Yorkshire, England to William Boothroyd and Elizabeth Scott. Abel worked in the mills at Huddersfield.
He married Jane Heppleston in 26 Jun 1876 Calverley, St Wilfrid, Yorkshire, England on 26 Jun 1876. They would have one daughter together; Lucy Jane, born on Sept. 20, 1876.
Shortly after their daughter’s birth, Abel emigrated to the United States, settling in Providence, Rhode Island. Jane would follow when Lucy Jane was old enough to travel. But when Jane and their daughter arrived in Providence in 1882, Abel was nowhere to be found. The family believed he had gone West seeking adventure.
Abel’s name next appeared in Steele County, North Dakota in 1893 attesting on behalf of Mrs. Eden Scholes’ citizenship application. Mrs. Scholes was also an emigre from England, having arrived in 1881 in NYC. It is not known if they met in North Dakota, or if they had met before Abel’s disappearance from Providence. However, Eden had filed her intent to apply for citizenship in 1883 already living in North Dakota. In 1894 Mrs. Scholes was granted a parcel of land in Riverside Township, Steele County, ND. Two years later, in 1896, Abel was also granted a parcel that adjoined Mrs. Scholes’. Meanwhile, in 1895, Abel Boothroyd had become a citizen of the United States, filed in Steele County, ND.
On 10 Apr 1885, an article appeared in the Hope Pioneer announcing the arrival of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Day to Hope from Chicago, intending to be “permanent residents of Steele County.”[1] See the Research Notes below for a probable Abel Boothroyd/James A. Day connection.
In 1908, a marriage certificate is filed in Steele County for Abel Boothroyd and Eden Scholes. Abel was 70 at the time and Eden was 56, according to the document. (It should be noted that at this date, Jane (Heppleston) Boothroyd was still alive. There is no evidence, yet, that a divorce was granted.)
It is surmised that Abel took on an assumed name in North Dakota and with his association with Eden Scholes. The marriage certificate dated 22 Jul 1908 shows a Judge Moote officiated. An article in the local paper shows Eden Scholes marrying a James A. Day on that same date, with the same Judge officiating.
From The Hope Pioneer (Hope, ND), 23 Jul 1908
“MARRIED On Wednesday, July 22nd, Mr. James A. Day to Miss Eden Scholes. Judge Moote of Sherbrooke, officiating. Both parties have resided on a farm west of this place for a number of years and have many friends who will wish them well and may they spend the balance of their days happily together.”[2]
In the 1900 US census for North Dakota, there is no record of Abel Boothroyd, but Eden Scholes is listed in the household of James A. Day, as his sister.
James A. Day died on 21 Apr 1909 and the FAG page records him as the husband of Eden Scholes.[3]
From The Hope Pioneer (Hope, ND), 22 Apr 1909
“Yesterday morning about 11 o'clock Mr. James, A. Day died of heart disease while reading a newspaper, sitting in a chair at his home in this city. He has been a sufferer of this disease for, a long while. Dr. Hedding was called but when he arrived Mr. Day was past all help.”[4]
Finally, in the notice about the estate of Eden S. Day, she is also called Eden S. Boothroyd.
From The Hope Pioneer (Hope, ND), 13 Dec 1923
“In the Matter of the Estate of Eden S. Day, otherwise called Eden S. Boothroyd, deceased. Notice is hereby, given by the undersigned, Charles W.
