Original Settler of Mound Bayou

James A. Booker was born on 7 Dec 1875 in Kanawha, West Virginia, United States to John H. Booker and Adaline Bohn. ^[1][2]

In the 1880 census James (age 4) was the son of John H Booker in Malden, Kanawha, West Virginia, United States.^[3]

In 1900 James was a student at the West Virginia Colored Institute living in the household of Mabell Brown in Tyler, Kanawha, West Virginia.^[4]

He graduated from the Normal and Agricultural Institute and in 1904 he became an instructor there. He resigned in 1906 to enter the Agricultural Department of the Tuskegee Institute. He completed a two years post graduate course in one year. In 1908 he was appointed Special Agent of the Farmers' Cooperative Demonstration Work of the U. S. Department of Agriculture and assigned to Mound Bayou. ^[2]

In September 1909 James married Viola B. Caldwell at the Green Grove Baptist Church.

In the 1910 census Jas (age 34), Distribution Agent, was the married head of household in Beat 3, Bolivar, Mississippi, United States.^[5]

The Negro at Mound Bayou

Mr. Booker is a communicant of the Missionary Baptist Church and zealously active in all religious work. He is president of the local B. Y. P. U., of the Green Grove Baptist Church. He was married here on the first of Sept.,1909, to Miss Viola B. Caldwell, a most estimable young lady of this town, and a native of Mississippi.
