Biography

Grace was born in about 1838^[1]. She was the daughter of Thomas Bond and Grace Hetherington.

England and Wales Census, 1841: Living with her parents, 1 year old sister Mary and 10 other individuals at Bolton-Le-Sands, Lancashire, England. She was aged 2. Her father was a Schoolmaster.

She travelled to the British Virgin Islands with her parents when she was only very young. Unfortunately both her parents died there in 1844.

Back in England in 1851, she was living with her grandparents Thomas and Mary Bond with her three siblings Mary, William and Hannah in New Road, Lancaster, Lancashire, England. She was aged 13 and a scholar.

She probably married John Pickard in 1863 at Saltergate Wesleyan Chapel, Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England^[2].

England and Wales Census, 1871: Living with her husband John at Pilsley, Derbyshire, England. Aged 32. Her husband was a Weighman. (No children recorded.)

Occupation: School Teacher.

Grace passed away in 1876 at the age of about 37^[3].

DERBYSHIRE NEWS.

INQUESTS AT CLAY CROSS.—Yesterday Mr. C. S. B, Busby held two Inquests. The first was at the Three Horse Shoes Inn, Pilsley, on the body of Grace H. Pickard, wife of a colliery clerk, who died the previous day from being burnt. From the evidence it seems that deceased, who was thirty-seven years of age, went to light the fire, and it is supposed that she was seized with a fit, and burnt to death. Her husband was the first to find her. Verdict of "Accidental death."^[4]
