On 23 October 1856 in Castellammare del Golfo, Giuseppe Bonanno, of unknown parents, marries Vita Vallone, daughter of Stefano Vallone and Maria Venza.[1]
Giuseppe and Vita have three known children: Giuseppe (c. 1861), Stefano (c. 1862), Salvatore (1878).
On 19 August 1878 in Castellammare, Giuseppe Bonanno, age 40 (b. 1838), borgese (middle class), reports the birth that day at via Garibaldi, #247, to Vita Vallone fu Stefano, his wife, faticatrice (the feminine form of a word for “heavy laborer”), with whom he lives, a baby boy who is named Salvatore.[2]
The Bonanno clan of which Giuseppe is the patriarch feuds with the Buccellato clan in Castellammare del Golfo.
On 6 February 1894 in Castellammare del Golfo, Giuseppe Bonanno, bachelor, age 30 (b. 1864), possidente, native resident of Castellammare, son of the late Giuseppe Bonanno who was a resident here, and of Vita Vallone, who lives here; and Laurea Di Filippi, virgin, age 24 (b. 1870), housewife, native resident of Castellammare, daughter of Girolamo Di Filippi, resident of Castellammare, and of the late Marianna Gancemi; announce their marriage in the civil record. Laura can sign her own name but Giuseppe does not.[3]
In his autobiography, Salvatore's son, Joseph, writes that Stefano dies in an accident.[4]
On 12 May 1899, the mandamento receives notice of the death, on the 5th of this month, of Stefano Bonanno, age 37 (b. 1862), son of the late Giuseppe Bonanno and of Vita Vallone, from this town.[5]
On 17 October 1899, the mandamento is advised of the death on the 3rd of October of Giuseppe Bonanno, age 38 (b. 1861), son of the late Giuseppe Bonanno and of Vita Vallone, and married to Laura Di Filippi.[6]
Salvatore is 21 years old and a seminary student when he becomes the patriarch of his family's clan in Castellammare.[4]
On 15 March 1904 in Castellammare del Golfo, Salvatore Bonanno, celibe, age 25 (b. 1879), possidente, son of the late Giuseppe Bonanno and the living Vita Vallone; and Martino Bonventre, age 50 (b. 1854), borgese, father of Caterina Bonventre, age 20 (b. 1884), housewife, daughter of Carmela Magaddino, housewife; publish their intention to celebrate a marriage between Bonanno and Bonventre in Castellammare.[7]
Salvatore marries on 9 April 1904 to Caterina Bonventre.[2]
