Biography

Providenza Bologna is from "Cascacis," according to the record of her second marriage, in 1851. She is the daughter of Michele Bologna and Francesca Rizzo.

Providenza marries at least twice, first to Domenico Battaglia.

On 25 July 1846 in Capaci, Domenico Battaglia, celibe, age 30 (b. 1816), born in Capaci, carrettiere (carter), resident of (illegible), son of the late Giuseppe Battaglia and of the late Rosalia Marsalisi in Battaglia; and Provvidenza Bologna, age 30 (b. 1816), nubile, born in Capaci, living in strada Longo, daughter of the late Michele Bologna and the living Francesca Rizzo, widow, age 47 (b. 1799); announce their intention to marry in the civil record. They are married in the Church on 27 July 1846, record no. 14.[1]

Domenico and Providenza have at least two children, Giuseppe (1846) and Domenico (c. 1850).

Giuseppe is born 26 October 1846 in his parents’ home on via del Carmine in Corleone, and baptized two days later. His father, Domenico Battaglia, age 24 (b. 1822), trafficante (a dealer/merchant), reports his birth. His mother, Providenza Bologna, is 28 (b. 1818).[2] His godparents are Antonino and Francesca Bulogna, mother and unmarried son.[3]

A handwritten notice appears in the civil marriage allegati of Domenico's son, Giuseppe, on the letterhead of the director of the Sicilian Archive (“Direzione degli Archivi Siciliani”). This records the death of Domenico Battaglia, noted originally by the civil authorities in Misilmeri on 3 September 1848. He is the son of Giuseppe Battaglia and Rosaria Macaluso, and is married to Providenza Bologna.[4]

The infant son of Domenico Battaglia and Providenza Bologna, also named Domenico, dies on 9 October 1850.[5]

Domenica remarries to Salvatore Gusmano, son of the late Antonino Gusmano and the living Luigia Salerno, on 6 February 1851 in Corleone. Her father has died.[6]

Domenica and Salvatore have at least one child, Francesca (c. 1863).

Giuseppe, who is a trafficante (merchant) by profession, marries Rosa di Miceli on 27 April 1870.[7]

Francesca marries Biagio Berlingeri on 27 November 1883 in Corleone.[8]

Providenza dies on 23 February 1913 in Corleone.[9]
