Biography

Babette (Bloch) Meyer has Jewish Roots.
Babette (Bloch) Meyer has German Roots.

Babette (also known as Babetta or Barbara) was born in Bavaria, probably in 1809.[1] Death records of her children Sarah (Winklein) Hanauer, Fannie (Winklein) Friedenheit, and Max A. Meyer indicate that her maiden surname was Bloch or Block.

In 1835 she immigrated to the United States on board the ship Oglethorpe, sailing from Havre to New York; on arrival in New York she was recorded as Bobette Block, age 26, a native of Bavaria. She may have traveled unaccompanied by other family, as the arrival list does not include any other passengers who shared her surname.[2]

She was first married to Julius Winklein.

Her husband, Julius, passed away about 1849.

Babette married her second husband, Abram or Abraham Meyer, in December 1852 in Hamilton county, Ohio. They obtained a marriage license in Hamilton County on 6 December 1852. The marriage license names them as Abraham Meyer and Babette Winklin. He signed his name as Abrah Meyer. The record does not include a "return of marriage" to indicate the date of marriage.[3]

Her husband, Abraham Meyer, died on 27 February 1877.[4]

Mrs. Babette Meyer passed away on 07 Feb 1899 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, USA. [5] and was buried at Walnut Hills Jewish Cemetery in Evanston, Hamilton County, Ohio, USA. [6]

Sources

  1. The 1835 immigration recorded recorded her as 26 years old, consistent with birth in 1808 or 1809. The 1860 U.S. Census recorded her as 50 years old, suggesting birth in 1809 or 1810, and the 1880 U.S. Census recorded her as 71 years old, suggesting that she was born in 1808 or 1809. The 1870 U.S. Census gives her age as 69 years old, suggesting a birth date of about 1801; this is not credible for a woman who bore her last child in 1857.
