I am an academic who has spent my career focused on African art and history and their global intersections -with Europe, the Americas, Asia. I have a special passion for the medieval period and connections between Africa, Spain, Portugal, England and France during this period. I am working on several book projects. One is called 1325: How Medieval Africa Made the World Modern; Another is the Streets of Newtowne, an illustrated history of Cambridge, Ma.from the Native Americans, to the present day. I have gained key insights on these issues through my work on Wikitree, and hope to contribute more as well. I am also a local community activist (invested in issues of architectural preservation) in Cambridge, Ma. where I live and work. I teach a course on Harvard Square where I introduce my students to the history of the Native Americans, Pilgrims, Slave Owners, Revolutionary War and other events that happened here, and have found that key insights can be found here on Wikitree. As a strong supporter of the Wikipedia concept it was a delight to discover Wiki-tree. I am particularly interested in adding (facts to biographical details to the lives of women, Africans, Native Americans - and others that history books tend to leave out.

Research notes: for my further study.

Nearly 500 ancestors are listed as arriving with the Puritan Great Migration (to New England) who emigrated from England or Holland between 1630 and 1640 (Mayflower and other vessels): Among the better known are Catherine White Carver (spouse of John Carver), William Brewster (a leader in the separatist movement), Thomas Dudley, the 2nd Ma. Governor, and John Vassall - son of a key investor in the Mass. Bay Company).

SEE this link for a list of known ancestors who arrived with during the 1620-40 Puritan Migration [1]

American Places where most of my early ancestors lived early on include: Massachusetts (Cambridge, Boston, Concord, and Salem); Connecticut (Hartford, New Haven and Windsor); Rhode Island (Providence and Newport).; New Hampshire (Hadley) and Vermont (Castleton, Hinesburgh, Richmond, Huntington, and Burlington).

Circa. 500 relatives were early residents of Cambridge, Ma. (Newtowne - see map at right for their locations) as well as nearby towns. Large numbers fled the strictures of then Puritan Cambridge soon after arriving to found other area towns (most importantly Hartford, but also Watertown, Concord, Salem, Ma., New Haven, Ct. and Providence, R.I.). Among the better known are Thomas Hooker, Peter Bulkeley, Anne Hutchinson, and Roger Williams. Two of my ancestors (Hooker and Bulkeley) were judges at the trial of a third relative (midwife Anne Hutchinson) who was forced out of Cambridge for advocating for religious freedom and tolerance.

SEE this link for a list of early Cambridge Relatives: [2]

Witch trials; A number of relatives were involved in the Salem and Hartford Witch trials - as accusers, judges, individuals found guilty (and executed), individuals found guilty and released, people acquitted, people released, as well as people of influence who either supported and opposed these events. Among the most prominent were the scientist Thomas Brattle (who argued strenuously against this practice) and Rev. Cotton Mather (pastor of the North Church in Boston) who strongly supported this effort including the use of spectral evidence.

SEE this link for the identity of relatives involved in these witch trials: : [3]

Relatives known to have been slave owners in circa 1749 include the following members of the 1st Parish Church in Cambridge: Deacon Samuel Whttemore (shop keeper - Whittemore-313), William Angier (tanner - Angier-96), Lieut. Ebenezer Stedman (inn keeper - Stedman-821), Judge Edmund Trowbridge (Trowbridge-1364). [1].

Other Cambridge relatives who fit this identity include Jamaican and Barbados plantation owner John Vassall (Vassall-19) and wealthy Cambridge merchant Henry Vassal - Vassal-33) and Anna King (King-399) spouse of William Vassall (Vassall-6) as well as Gen. Nathan Leavenworth (in Hinesburgh, Vt.)

Revolutionary War: too numerous to count, including John Hicks (Hicks-5726) who was killed in the first day of fighting in the Revolutionary War. Some were tories (Vassal, Brattle -supporting another distant relative - Charles I ) but most were Patriots.

New England Signers of the Declaration of Independence - John and Samuel Adams (MA - through Mildred Preston), John Hancock (MA- through Peter Bulkeley), Robert Paine (MA- through Wright Clark), William Ellery (R.I.-through John Bulkeley Perry). William Whipple (NH - through Mildred White Preston), Roger Sherman (Ct.- through Mildred White Preston), William Williams (Ct.- through Clarissa Sanford Preston), and Abraham Clark (NJ - through Lafayette Preston)

Others in New England - Ralph Waldo Emerson (through Peter Bukleley), Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (through Mildred Preston), Ethan Allen and John Dewey (through W.S. Preston), George H. Perkins (through Wright Clark), Charles Elliott (through Betsey Leavenworth).

More than 1216 ancestors of Grace Chetwood, Anna Merwin Buckingham and Linnea Mae Mace Preston (among others) are on the European Aristocrats list from 890 CE to 1538: from a diversity of countries - the largest number from France (764) and England (962), but others include Austria, Germany, Holy Roman Empire ( Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Scotland, Spain, Sweden, Russia (Catherine the Great), and Wales. Nine of this group died in Jerusalem (or on the way there during the Crusades) and one was born there - in Acre (Joan Plantagenet). Art History linked relatives include Cosimo I de Medici (Medici - 1) via Linnie May Mace Preston spouse of Frank James Preston - de Medici was a banker and founder of the art dynasty in Florence (Palazzo Medici) - and art patron of Donatello (sculptor of David), Fra Angelico, and Fra Fillipo Lippi and he enabled architect Brunelleschi to finish the Duomo in Florence. This comes via Cosimo's Sforza ancestry. A subject of a famous Uccello fresco, John Hawkwood (Hawkwood-2) was born about 1323 and became Captain of Condottieri. He features in Barbara Tuchman's Distant Mirror pp. 225, 254-8, 322-3 and is honored in Florence with the well known Uccello fresco.

Hi Suzanne, it's been 17 days since I asked if you're still interested in the PGM Project. I apologize if I've missed a response from you, but I'll assume if I haven't heard from you in the next seven days that your interest in the project has changed, and I'll remove your badge. I'd appreciate hearing from you. Thank you.

1. Would you like to continue as a PGM project team member?;

2. Do you have any suggestions for PGM Project priorities in the next year (optional)?;

3. Do you have interest in taking a more active role within the PGM project, and if so, what you might be interested in doing (optional)?

Please respond to this comment on your profile, or if you'd like, send a private message to either Bobbie (Madison) Hall or S (Hill) Willson.

Thanks for all you do for PGM and WikiTree!

Howdy Suzanne,

Thank you for all your help connecting Mary (Curtis) Wood. I appreciate it. I enjoyed reading your bio and look forward to crossing paths with you again sometime.

Sincerely, Cheri (Your 8th cousin)  : )

Dear Cheri (my 8th cousin), my pleasure! I love the wikitree project/format. I was on the hunt for a different Curtis, and when this came up I simply slotted it into the right spot in this great system. Best, Suzanne
Hi Suzanne!

Thanks for contributing to Puritan Great Migration profiles over the last six months. Every little bit helps, so please keep those edits coming!

Like all WikiTree projects we check in with team members twice per year and it's that time again. Please respond within the next two weeks to let me know:

  1. If you'd like to continue as a PGM project team member
  2. If you're happy with the team you're on (Research and/or Profile Improvement) or if you'd like to make a change
  3. Optionally, what you like since the reboot back in May or what you think could be improved. This could be something about Discord, or Google Groups, or managed profile spreadsheets, or challenge participation or really anything. If you like everything the way it is, you can let me know that too :)

If you'd like to tell me about a particular project or family you're working on, I'd love to hear about that as well.

Please respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message on WikiTree. I look forward to hearing from you.

Many thanks!

Hello from the Magna Carta Project! I'm contacting you to remind you that you have not yet met the project's minimum contribution requirements that were in place when you joined the project. You can review our membership requirements here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Magna_Carta_Project_Members.

We recognize that real life can sometimes intervene and we'd be happy to give you an extension to complete these contributions. Just let me know if you're still interested in being a project member and which profiles you'd like to work on.

Thanks!

Hi Suzanne,

Since I have not heard back from you, I removed your Magna Carta project member badge. You are still a member of the project's Google Group and can follow what the project is working on via the Google Group. If you'd like to participate as a badged project member in the future, you're welcome to reapply via our project join post (a link can be found on the main project page).

Best regards, Traci

Fixed this, I believe. Thank you.
I don't think you meant to add Lawrence-290 as the wife of Hannah Lawrence. Lawrence-290 is her father so you should remove the spouse. Please remember to add reliable sources for changes that you make.

You have added Hannah Lawrence-5231, as wife of Enoch Lawrence-290, without any source. Wikitree wants sources added, especially for outrageous statements such as this, since Enoch Lawrence-290 was also her father.

Pleasae add an authoritative source or delete the contribution.

Hi Suanne, welcome to WikiTree and thanks for your interest in joining the Magna Carta Project as a participating member. If you are relatively new to medieval genealogy I would suggest that you join the project at the Affiliate level where you can gain experience without having to meet the more stringent participation requirements of the "Badged" membership level. Badged members are often Pre-1500 certified which enables them to work on the older profiles.

For more information on joining and membership levels please see the following page. Once you have decided which membership level best suits your interest and experience let me know and we will get you inducted into the project.

Hi Suzanne,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working with members of the projects which coordinate them is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus. Review the project pages for special guidelines and to learn how to collaborate with the project members.

Let me know if you have trouble finding projects which fit your focus. Click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page.

Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles you manage, or edit. (See:https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Pre-1700_Profiles#Cite_reliable_sources).

Hi Mindy

I am trying to merge two John Whites White- 43313 White- 57485 I have added a possible match for William White's son, John White (43313) is listed as unmarried or no spouse/no child on several sources) and a birth date of Mar. 28,1746 in Hadley, Ma. with John White (57485) b. circa 1745 and married to Rhoday White in Rockingham, Vt (80 miles from Hadley, Ma).

John and Rhoday (Rhoda) had several children, including Simeon (Timeon) White (b.13 Mar.1770) and Jonathan White Jr. (b. Aug. 1772 in Rockingham, Vt). Simeon's. wife Melinda is daughter of Nathaniel (Joseph’s line, Cheshire, Ma.) the first deacon of the Wallingford Vt Church).

John White is ancestor of my paternal grandmother, Mildred White Preston (spouse of William Sanford Preston) in Burlington, Vt.

Since the John White (43313 b.1746 from Hadley Ma,) is listed as having no known spouse/children, there is no one there to connect with, but I did contact the wiki people responsible for both John white (b.1746) and his father, William White. I also did “due diligence” in ruling out all other John Whites on various sites-cemetery, etc.

Thoughts on how I might proceed with this merge?

Best, Suzanne

Hi Mindy, I am now a pretty well-informed wikitree contribution person - and love the site.

The other day an 85 year old "distant" relative (whom I have not met) told me we share a genealogy and wants to join wikitree but keeps getting rejected. I had offered to help her add information, but said I could not sign her up. Is it possible for you to reach out to her and try to help? I could send you her email. Best, Suzanne
