George Lincoln Blackwell was an American author and Bishop of the AME Zion Church from 1908 to 1926.[1]

George Blackwell was born into slavery in North Carolina in 1861. He was the son of Haley Blackwell and Catherine Aakens/Atkins.[2]

In the 1880 census, George (age 19), single, a Laborer, was the son of Haley and Catherine Blackwell in Fishing Creek, Granville, North Carolina, United States.[3] He was living with his parents and six other siblings.

In the 1900 census, George (age 38), Methodist Preacher, was the married head of household in Charlotte Ward 2, Mecklenburg, North Carolina.[4] George Blackwell is the husband of Annie Blackwell. The Census states that they had been married 12 years, had two children and both were deceased.

In the 1910 census, George (age 49), Clergyman, was the married head of household in Philadelphia Ward 26, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States.[5]

In the 1920 census, George (age 58), Bishop, was the married head of household in Philadelphia Ward 30, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[6]

George on 20 March 1926 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[2] His passing was noted in the San Antonio Express, Monday Morning, March 22, 1926, pg3, “BISHOP BLACKWELL OF PHILADELPHIA DEAD”. The newspaper states that Bishop Blackwell was educated at Livingston College, Salisbury, North Carolina and at his death he was Bishop in the American Methodist Episcopal Church.[7] George Blackwell is buried in Eden Cemetery, Collingdale, Pennsylvania. Education and Accomplishments

1888 - graduated from Livingstone College, Salisbury, North Carolina[9]

1892 - graduated Boston University School of Theology[9]

1893 to 1896 - dean of Livingstone College Theological School of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church[9]

1908 - elected as a Bishop of American Methodist Episcopal Church.[9]

He was the author of three books: “Model Homestead”; “Cloaks of Sin”; and “A Man Wanted.”
