Article from Lindsay Post May 29,1930
Many Descandants of Kerr Family Are Here
Life of Original Occupants of Old Log House, Recently Unearthed on Court
House Lawn Are Recalled By Family Members.
MANY DESCENDANTS
(by Mrs. A. H. Monk)
Bethany, May 20 - In several recent issues of the Post much comment has
been made over an old log house unearthed while digging sewers at the court
house, and effort to trace former owners of any has been published.
The land, as had been stated, was taken from the Crown by one Samuel Kerr
he took five acres of land where the court house and jail now stand from
the crown in the year 1845. That same year he also married a young Irish
lady, Elizabeth Blackwell, who was on a visit to her brother, Edward
Blackwell, at a small village near Lindsay, called Cottenham's village, but
was lated named Omemee.
Samuel Kerr and his bride set up house in the small log structure now
causing so much comment. About a year later Mr. Kerr opened a general store
on William Street where everything needful to the settlers could be
purchased. In connection with the store he ran a bakery business and at
that time it was called Lindsay bakery.
To Samuel Kerr and his wife were born 12 children and as the family grew
Mr. Kerr decided that a farm was the best place to raise a family, so he
sold out his business and bought a farm in the township of Emily near what
was then known as Downey's Cross, but later named Downeyville. This farm is
still in the Kerr name although it is not cultivated but used for ranching
purposes.
History of Family
Six of the Kerr children reached maturity and the eldest son, Edward passed
away on New Years Day 1929 at his home near Lorneville from pneumonia.
Another son Samuel died a few years previous at his home near Argyle both
had large families all of which are living.
Three daughters went to live in the U.S.A. Elizabeth, ( Mrs. A.
Baltimore) and Sarah, ( Mrs. James O'Dell) of Rochester N.Y., have passed
on. Just a few years ago while the youngest son, William Blackwell Kerr, is
still living at 157 Harvard Street, Rochester, N.Y. and his youngest
daughter, Susan ( Mrs. Wallace Martin) is living at 8146 Bryden Ave.,
Detroit Michigan.
Samuel Kerr's descendants' were 29 grandchildren and 38 great
grandchildren. The majority of whom are living in and around Lindsay and
makes it their shopping center. Samuel Kerr's sister Abigail was the wife
of William Corley, who owned the property where the Lindsay Golf Links are
now situated and whose only surviving child is Miss Abigail Corley, Kent
Street West.
Last September the Kerr family held a re-union at the Memorial Park,
Lindsay, where the descendants of the Samuel Kerr in question with uncles,
aunts and cousins to the number of almost a hundred gathered from all parts
to renew aquaintances and where if all goes well they expect to meet again
next year.
