In his 1938 book, Utterback history and genealogy of the Utterback family in America, 1622-1937, William Irvin Utterback has Lana's nickname as "Lane" and that she was born on 3 Sep 1814 in Cadiz, Harrison Co., Ohio. ^[1] However, her gravestone has "Lana" with her birth date as 3 Dec 1814, ^[2] her obituary says that she was born on 3 Dec 1814 in Culpeper Co., Virginia, ^[3] and all her census records state that she was born in Virginia. Also, the Utterback Book states that she was married 25 Dec 1835. However, that was the date that the license was issued; the wedding day was actually on 31 Dec 1835. ^[4]

DEATH OF MRS. UTTERBACK

Another one of the old pioneers of this county has passed to the great beyond on April 28, 1906. Mrs. Utterback, relict of the late J. A. Utterback, whose death occurred March 8, 1905, died Sunday in the home of her son, Thos. J. of this city. Lana Blackwell was born in Culpepper [sic] County, Virginia, Dec. 3, 1814, and died at the advanced age of 91 years, 4 months, 25 days.

She was married to James A. Utterback in Tuscocoras [sic] County, OH, Sept. 15, 1835. They came to this county in the fall of 1856, locating in Liberty township, two miles southwest of Winthrop. There were six children born to the marriage, three of whom are living: Robert, living in Oklahoma; T. J. of Independence; and Joseph, of Acampoa, California.

Mrs. Utterback very early professed religion, and was a member of the Campellite church. Funeral services were held Monday at the residence, north of the court house. Rev. T. E. Taylor of the M. E. church, preached the sermon. Interment in Quasqueton Cemetery in the family lot--Conservative.
