Biography

Louis Blackman is a Military Veteran.
Served in the United States Navy
Corporal Louis Blackman served with the United States Army during the Spanish-American War.
Service Started: (i) Sept 3, 1898, (ii) Jan 30, 1899
Unit(s): 6th Artillery Regiment
Service Ended: (i) Jan 23 1904, (ii) Jan 23, 1904
Louis M. Blackman was born in 1868 at Marshall, Michigan, the son of Frank Blackman and Sarah Cassidy.[1]
In June 1884, he enlisted into the U.S. Navy at New York.[2]
On 3rd September 1898, Louis enlisted in the U.S. Army, and was assigned to the 6th Artillery, Company "K."[3] Louis Blackman would have served during the Spanish-American War (1898–1899). On 25th January 1899, he was discharged from this tour of duty at Fort Monroe, Virginia.[3] For the remainder of his term, it is unknown in which engagements Louis M. Blackman served from 1899 to 1904. Wars in which the U.S. armed forces were engaged during this period include the Philippine-American War (1899–1902), the so-called “Banana Wars” or “minor interventions” in Latin America, and the Moro Rebellion (1899–1913) in the southern Philippines.[4]
Wikipedia offers the following brief outline of the 6th Artillery's history and clarifies the role of the regiment during the Spanish-American war and afterwards:
Constituted 8 March 1898 in the Regular Army as the "6th Regiment of Artillery". Organized 23 March 1898 at Fort McHenry, Maryland. Colonel Edward B. Williston, a Medal of Honor recipient for actions in the Civil War, was the regiment's first commander.
Order of battle information indicates that the regiment did not deploy outside the U.S. in the Spanish–American War of 1898. However, the regiment has battle honors for the Philippine Insurrection (a.k.a. Philippine–American War) that closely followed it.[5]
On 17th September 1904, Louis married Nina F. England in Jackson, Michigan.[6]
On 18th June 1947, Louis M. Blackman died at Jackson, aged seventy-eight years.[1] His body was buried in Mount Evergreen cemetery, Jackson,[7] with a gravestone marking his service in the 6th Artillery, U.S. Army from 1898–1904.[8]
