Notables Project
Elsa Blöcher is Notable.

Elsa Blöcher was a German teacher, historian, and author.

She visited the elementary school in Wallau since 1907, followed by the city school in Biedenkopf until 1915. In 1921, she finished her Abitur at the Oberlyzeum (a high school for girls) in Kassel. A year later, she received the permission to teach at higher girl's schools.

After working as a home tutor in Frankfurt am Main for three years, she began to study history, German studies and geography. In 1926 she moved to the University of Marburg, where she earned her doctor's degree (Dr. phil.) in 1931, with a thesis about the history of the salt trade in the Wetterau region during the 17th and 18th centuries.

After working as a teacher at the Elisabethschule in Marburg (until 1935) and in Wiesbaden (until 1940), she returned to her parent's home in Wallau, and took a post as a teacher at the "Staatliche Oberschule für Jungen" (a public grammar school for boys) in Biedenkopf. She stayed there until her retirement. During her final years of work, she served as director of studies, and held the position of school principal at the Lahntalschule.

Following the Second World War, Blöcher became involved in researching the history of the Hessian Hinterland. In 1948, she became a board member of the Hinterländer Geschichtsverein (the society for the history of the Hinterland). In 1953 she became chairman, a position she held until 1985, and also editor of the Hinterländer Geschichtsblätter (the society's journal). In 1968, she became second chairman of the Verein für Hessische Geschichte und Landeskunde (the society for the history of Hesse). In the 1950s, Blöcher started to publish essays and books about regional history.
