Biography

This is the profile for Mary Bitfield, the daughter of Samuel Bitfield.

Parentage; Date and Place of Birth

John Plummer's 1992 article entitled "English Origin of Samuel Bitfield" in The American Genealogist statee that Mary's mother was Samuel's unidentified first wife and estimated that Mary's date of birth was "say 1626".[1] Subsequent research has, however, discovered records that establish the identity of her mother and suggest a later date of birth.

Elizabeth's mother was very probably Margery Offlett, who married Samuel Bitfield May 1626 at St. Werburgh, Bristol[2] and was buried at at St. Thomas, Bristol on 1 April 1632.[3]

While no baptism record has yet been found for Mary, her sister Elizabeth was very probably the Elizabeth Bidfield, daughter of Samuel Bidfield, who was baptized on 21 March 1628/9 at St. Thomas, Bristol, England.[4] Since Mary's parents were married in May 1626, (2) her sister Elizabeth was baptized in March 1628/9, and (3) the fact that her family is mentioned before Elizabeth's in her father's will,[1] suggesting the Mary was born before Elizabeth, Mary was probably born about 1627. Since the records indicate that her family was probably living in Bristol at the time, Mary was probably born there.

Death

"Mrs. [Mary] Plumer died in 1701, and Mr. [Samuel] Plumer died in the summer of the following year, at the age of eighty-three."[5] These deaths are not recorded in the Newbury Vital Records, nor on Findagrave.com, however Samuel's will & probate file is extant and agrees with his death in 1702. His wife's death perhaps needs to be substantiated beyond Perley's genealogy.

Just a heads up that I intend to update this profile to incorporate the new research on her sisters bpt record and mother per the updated profile for her father.

Is her birth in Newbury, Massachusetts or England? The Newbury source doesn't look too reliable and I couldn't find any listing for her in the Newbury records. Thanks.

I've changed her death date to 1701, adding the Plumer Genealogy source, since her daughter Lydia was born after the death date previously shown as 18 Oct 1665, which had no source cited.

Bidfield-1 and Bitfield-50 appear to represent the same person because: Same parents, same marriage. The "correct" spelling is determined to be "Bitfield" by its use in the article published in The American Genealogist, (among others). Both spellings were used, and the alternate has been added to Mary's profile. The Style Guide directs that we merge into the lowest numbered profile with the correct spelling of the last name at birth. So, in this case, the number is not important. Please merge INTO Bitfield-50 as the TARGET profile for duplicates.

Thank you!

Bitfield-97 and Bitfield-94 appear to represent the same person because: This looks like a likely match! Thanks, Jeff

Bitfield-94 and Bitfield-50 appear to represent the same person because: Same name and daughter, Mary Plummer. Also, we have sets of duplicates all the way down the line here.

Please retain the alternate death information during the merge, as this may be a helpful hint for further research (but should not hold up the merge)

Please approve if you agree these two represent the same person (Bitfield-50 is the lowest numbered profile with the correct spelling at birth)

Thanks!
