Stephen Bishop was for many years a member of the Guilford .train-band (militia) and had been promoted from the ranks to the position of ensign, Lt. and Capt. of the company. The following account of his election to the Captaincy of the company, taken from the Colonial Records, will be of interest: "John French, jr., John Graves and John Wilcox made complaint to the Assembly, Oct., 1714, that Lt. Stephen Bishop, Ensign James Meigs and Sergt. Thomas Cruttenden were not fairly chosen to be Captain, Lieutenant and Ensign of the Company of East Guilford, some persons putting in more votes than one apiece, were by order of this Assembly, sent for and heard in this complaint, whereupon this Assembly order that the said officers shall be established in their several offices and that the said complainants shall pay the costs and charges occasioned by the complaint, which is allowed to be £2 Is 1 Id, and that the execution for same be allowed by the secretary. Cost pd."
