Biography

Hannah was born on 2 August 1861 in Fremantle, Western Australia, the daughter of George Bishop and Margaret Ryan.^[1][2]

Born 1861 in Fremantle, Western Australia [15] to George BISHOP and Margaret RYAN [15].

Her given names also appeared as Anna Maria and Annah Maria [0: images 04313 & 04357]. She was educated at Saint Gertrude's College in New Norcia [P30]. She knew Bishop Rosendo SALVADO from the Benedictine Monastery of New Norcia[P9]

Prior to her marriage she was an accomplished horsewoman and had won jewellery for her horsemanship [P30].

She married "Alf" Alfred James HOLLINGSWORTH in Dongara on 3 September 1898 [332]. Her wedding ring was made from a gold nugget she had found in a sock she unintentionally kicked on a street in Kalgoorlie [P30]

She resided with her husband in Walkaway where he was employed as a Railway Repairer[6]

By 1907 they had shifted with their children to farmland in Carnamah [6] where she initially resided with her husband and children on the 200 acre Victoria Location 2981 just west of the Carnamah townsite [P30]. Later she resided with her husband and children on Boogabbie Farm seven miles east of the Carnamah townsite [P30]

She wore a dress of black foulard and piped white crepe de chene to the Race Ball at the Carnamah Hall on 10 April 1924 [10: 24-Apr-1924].

Attended the Grand Plain & Fancy Dress Ball in Carnamah on 6 August 1925 in an evening dress of black silk brocoaded [9: 21-Aug-1925].

Attended Charles ROBERTSON and Winifred LANG's wedding and reception in Carnamah on 27 March 1928 [4: 31-Mar-1928].

In early September 1930 she spent a short holiday in Perth [4: 6-Sep-1930].

Attended the Carnamah Football Club's Monster Ball in Carnamah on 2 September 1933 in a dress of navy blue marocain [5: 8-Sep-1933].

Sent a wreath for the grave of Christina B. D. FORRESTER of Carnamah at the Winchester Cemetery on 31 August 1934 [4: 8-Sep-1934].

Always dropped the 'H' in pronouncing her married surname as "ollingsworth" [P9].

Attended the funeral of Coorow stationmaster William C. Cox at the Karrakatta Cemetery in Perth on 4 November 1937 [5: 12-Nov-1937].

From The North Midland Times newspaper, Friday 13 April 1945: Obituary - Late Mrs. Hollingsworth "The death occurred in Perth on Tuesday of last week of Mrs. Annah Maria Hollingsworth, widow of the late Mr. Alfred Hollingsworth, late of Carnamah. The deceased lady had been failing in health for some years, and following the death of her husband about six months ago, her condition rapidly deteriorated. The late Mrs. Hollingsworth, who was formerly Miss Annah Bishop, spent her younger days around the Greenough district where she met and married her late husband. Three children resulted from the union, Richard, Stanley and Vittoria, (later Mrs. Percy Dewar). The late Mr. and Mrs. Hollingsworth later moved to Carnamah where they acquired farming interests some nine miles east of the siding. They were at that stage, among the early pioneers of the district. By dint of hard work they were able to build their property up to be one of the best farms in the district, and when their two sons grew up, they were able to establish them on farms also. With advancing years beginning to take their toll, the late Mr. and Mrs. Hollingsworth retired from active participation of farm work some years ago, and went to live in retirement at Guildford. Since that time their old homestead has been worked by their two sons. Living comparatively quiet lives, the deceased couple were not too well known by the younger folk of the district, but among the rapidly diminishing ranks of the old pioneers, the name Hollingsworth will always be spoken with respect. And so, at the age 76 years, Annah Hollingsworth has passed on to Higher Service. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon, the remains being laid to rest in the Anglican portion of the Karrakatta cemetery, beside those of her late life partner."
