Sgt Jonathan S. Bishop was born 20 October 1818, in Logan, Ohio. He was the son of John Bishop and Nancy Segar.

Jonathan's first wife was Mary McGahan, they were married 26 April 1840 in Champaign, Ohio.[1]Jonathan and Mary were the parents of two sons: John B, and George.[2]Mary died 25 March 1851, leaving Jonathan with two young sons.

Jonathan was married 2nd to Polly Ray in 1852. Polly had previously been married and had a son, who was born in 1842. Jonathan and Polly were the parents of two children: Charles and Harriet. She died 18 August 1863 in Tama, Iowa, a month before Jonathan's death. At the time of his enlistment he was living in Toledo, Iowa.[3]

Civil War

Jonathan was 44 years old when he enlisted with the Union Army on 15 August 1862. He was mustered into Company F, 28th Regiment, Iowa Infantry as a 8th Corporal. Jonathan was promoted to a 7th Corporal on 19 March 1863. [4]

He was the Flag Bearer at the Battle of Champion Hills, and was slightly wounded in his arm.

He died from disease "Typhoid Fever" on 8 September 1863 at Regiment Camp at Transylvania Landing, Louisiana. He was originally buried in Louisiana then reburied in the Vicksburg National Cemetery, Section P, 10162. He has a family memorial in Tama, Iowa.
