He was 31 years old when he enlisted with the Union Army on 24 January 1862 at Waseca, Minnesota. George was mustered into Company F, 5th Regiment, Minnesota Infantry on 24 January 1862.[5][6]
Sgt. Bishop died from disease on 19 September 1863 at Bear Creek, Mississippi. He is buried in an unknown grave in the Vicksburg National Cemetery.
