He attended Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) in Kingston, Ontario, graduating in 1903.[2] He held a civil engineering degree and during the First World War was a Defense Department district engineer in London, Ontario. During the Second World War. he served as a lieutenant-colonel with the Royal Canadian Engineers.[3]
In 1916 he married Edith Stuart Galbraith in Dunnville, Haldimand, Ontario.[4]
