Maria was born in 1837, daughter of Armistead and Ann Bishop.[1]

She and Robert Cheely, Jr., married on May 27, 1852, in Brunswick County, Virginia.[2]

The 1880 US Census documents the family living in Red Oak, Brunswick, Virginia.[3] The household at the time of that census included:

Mrs Maria A. Bishop
Maria passed away in 1919. [4]

Her obituary published in the Richmond Times-Dispatch on October 2, 1919, read: "Mrs. Maria A Cheely, widow of Robert L Cheely, one of the best known and best-beloved residents of Brunswick County died Monday at her home near Rawlings aged eighty-three years. Her funeral took place on Tuesday with burial in the family cemetery. Sorrowing her are nine children, thirty-seven grandchildren and thirty-eight great-grandchildren."
