Her obituary published in the Richmond Times-Dispatch on October 2, 1919, read:
"Mrs. Maria A Cheely, widow of Robert L Cheely, one of the best known and best-beloved residents of Brunswick County died Monday at her home near Rawlings aged eighty-three years. Her funeral took place on Tuesday with burial in the family cemetery. Sorrowing her are nine children, thirty-seven grandchildren and thirty-eight great-grandchildren."
