Abraham (Birnbaum) Beame is Notable.

Abraham was born in 1906 in London, England, a son of Philip Birnbaum and Esther Goldfarb. In an oral history interview, Abraham Beame described the story of his family's emigration, as had been told to him by his father. Abraham Beame said that his parents were born in Russia and lived in Warsaw (then part of Russia). His father Philip (last name not given in the oral history), a learned man and a socialist, had become involved with a group opposed to the czar. One day he heard that he was about to be arrested, so he immediately packed up to leave for America, taking his two sons with him. He told his pregnant wife to go to London to stay with her sister who lived there, and said he would send for her after he got to America. Abraham was born in London during the months that his mother was there.[1]

He arrived in New York in August 1906 with his mother Esther and brothers Isidore and Joe.[2] (Apparently the brothers had gone to London with their mother, rather than accompanying their father to America.) His father Philip had preceded them to America, arriving in New York in March. [3] His mother's sister who had lived in London also went to New York, possibly at the same time as Esther and the children, and lived near the Beame family.[1]

The family lived on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. His mother died when he was 6 years old, and Abraham knew very little about her.[1]

He married Mary Ingerman on 18 February 1928 in Manhattan.[4] They had two sons.

He died at age 94 on 10 February 2001, at New York University Medical Center in Manhattan, New York, from complications of open heart surgery.[5]
