Biography

Jane Birch was christened on 3 May 1835 at Hanley, Staffordshire, England, the daughter of Joseph Birch and Esther ^[1]

She married Charles Barcroft on 4 March 1857 at Hope, Staffordhsire, England. Her age is recorded as 22. ^[2]

In the 1861 census Jane is living at Windmill Street, Stoke Upon Trent, Staffs. with her husband Charles, 24, their daughter Eliza,3, and two sons: Joseph ,1, and John, 0. Jane's occupation is "China Painter". ^[3]

Jane is in Hanley, Staffs. in 1871 living with her husband Charles,a "Basket Maker", , and their children: Eliza, 13, Joseph, 11, John, 10, Mary, 6, and Emma, 4. They have a general servant, Louisa Hammersley, age 14. ^[4]

Their address in 1881 is Parliament New Row, Stoke Upon Trent, Staffs. Charles is still a "Basket Maker" and he and Jane are living with their children: Joseph, 21, a "Chemist's Assistant" and Emma, 14. ^[5]

The Barcrofts can be found in the Isle of Man in 1891. Charles, 54, is a "Fancy Bazaar Keeper". Their daughter Emma Barcroft, 24, a "shopwoman", and their niece Maud E. Birch, 19, also a "shopwoman" are present, as is a grand-daughter, Eliza Tipper, age 10, and a servant, Alice Briscoe, age 18. ^[6]
