James died during the Civil War as a prison of war at Hart Island, NY on June 8, 1865. Hart Island was the last prison established by the Union. James served in the 58th regiment out of McDowell county. He served along side two brother-in-law's, Moses and Elijah Hall. He was involved in many of the battles surrounding Sherman's march to the sea, and was captured in Orangeburg, SC in February of 1865. He was transferred to New Bern, NC and then on to Hart Island. As with most of the men in the NC regiment, he was in poor health when he arrived at Hart Island and died of "dropsy" (congestive heart failure). He was buried on Hart island and was later moved to Cypress Hill where they mispelled his name and was buried under the name of James A Reddix for over 140 years. Now he rest in peace under his correct name.
