Biography

John Bethune was baptised at East Grinstead on 18 Apr 1762, the ninth and last child of John Bethune, surgeon in East Grinstead, and his wife Mildred Thorpe.^[1] Following his father, he qualified as a surgeon, practising first in Westerham and then in Brighton. In 1789 he married Mary Ann Bodicoate and they had six children, of whom only three reached adulthood. On 12 May 1825, he was present at the birth of his grandchild Amelia Holden in Grand Parade, Brighton. He died in Brighton on 27 May 1830 and his will was proved on 21 Apr 1831.^[2]
