Biography

"Unknown" Bethune's birth date has been estimated @ around 1658, based on the birth of her first daughter, around 1678. Her death date has been estimated @ after 1704 based on the estimation made for the birth of her last daughter. "Unknown" was the daughter of Rev John Bethune of Bracadale (abt 1642-1708) and his wife Marion, daughter of John MacLeod II of Drynoch. John and Marion had four children. ^[1]

4. "Unknown" Bethune (abt 1658-aft 1704 ) married John MacLeod XII of Gesto.

"Unknown" Bethune married John MacLeod (XII of Gesto) (abt 1658-bef 1718). The marriage date has been estimated @ 1677, based on the approximate date of birth of their first daughter, around 1678. John and "Unknown" Bethune had at least three children; the first son, Rev Murdoch MacLeod of Glenelg, also included below, is said to have been an illegitimate son of John. ^[2]

1. (Daughter) MacLeod (abt 1678- ), married Roderick MacLeod VI of Ferinlea who is on record as tacksman of Ferinlea in 1724. Their daughter Flora MacLeod married Allan MacLeod on record at Trumpanmor in 1746. ^[3]
2. Rev Murdoch MacLeod of Glenelg (abt 1678-aft 1755), was older than Roderick, but Roderick was John MacLeod's heir. The probability, therefore, is that he was an illegitimate son. Rev Murdock, who was a graduate of King's College, Aberdeen, married Marion MacLeod in 1723, and after, Mary MacDonald. He was deposed for old age and infirmity as well as self-confessed immorality in 1755. ^[2]
3. Roderick MacLeod (XIII of Gesto) (abt 1690- aft 1749)
4. (Daughter) MacLeod (abt 1704-aft 1731) married Roderick MacLeod II of Balmore, who occupied the tack of Ose in the period 1724-1731 and may have succeeded his brother in Balmore. Her birth/death dates in the source "before 1724-after 1731" are based on the period mentioned above, but assuming she was married to Roderick by the time he was in Ose, her birth has been re-estimated @ around 1704, twenty years earlier. ^[2]
