Biography

Grace Best was born about 1865. She is the daughter of William Best and Elizabeth Ham.

In 1871 the family were living at 5 Broad Street, Kingsbury Episcopi. ^[1] Her elder brother William lived nextdoor, at no. 3.

When she was 17, she married her cousin John Lock at Kingsbury Episcopi on 25 December, 1882.^[2] They had nine children together.

At the April 1891 census, the family were living in East Street, Martock, Somerset. Present were John (26) working as a farm labourer, Grace (25), and their children George (8), William (5), Mary (3), Maud (1), and Rose (5 months).^[3]

In 1901 they were still living in East Street. John (36) was working as a wine merchant's labourer and they had all nine children living at home.^[4]

In 1911 they were living in Martock and John was working as a drayman to a wine merchant. This census records that all of their nine children were still living, and the enumerator mistakenly recorded the ones who were no longer living at home as well as the four who were.^[5]

She probably died in Somerset in 1943, with her death registered at Yeovil, Somerset, in the July-September quarter of 1943.^[6]
