There are between 42 and 52 variant spellings for this surname, including for each individual. It is not the same surname as Bessemer, the steel making family. The name is pronounced Bees mer or Bees eh mer and those 2 pronunciations are commonly alternated by individuals in the family. I've also been told by someone at a genealogical conference that there are 2 similar surnames: one with the pronunciation aforementioned, meaning bee keeper; the other pronounced Bays more, meaning broom maker. I have no further source for that explanation of the surname pronunciation and meaning. To date I have the following spellings: Beesmer, Beasmer, Beesimer, Beasimer, Besimer, Bismer, Beismer (my family's spelling), Besemer, Biesemeier, Biesemeyer.
