Biography

Joseph Alfred Bernier was born on 19 September 1895 in Fall River, Bristol County, Massachusetts, United States.[1]. He was the son of Jean Baptiste Bernier and Celanire Landry.[2][3] By age 14, he had finished school and was working as a doffer at the Kerr Mill.[4] His career would be interrupted by World War I.

Alfred joined the Army in June 1917.[5]. Private Bernier was assigned to Battery E of the 21st Field Artillery.[6]. Alfred would remember his participation in the Battle of Saint-Mihiel for the rest of his life.

After the war, Alfred returned home to Fall River. He resumed work at the Kerr Mill. He married Eugenie Roy on 25 November 1919.[7].[8] The couple had three children: Marie Bernier who died young, Leonard Bernier and Maurice Bernier.[9][10]

Joseph Alfred Bernier passed away on 21 August 1931. He was laid to rest at Notre Dame Cemetery located in Fall River, Bristol County, Massachusetts.[11][12]

Alfred J Bernier, World War veteran and an employee of the Kerr Mill for 21 years, died this morning at his home, 13 Bogie Street, at the age of 35. He was born in this city and during the World War served in the St. Mihiel drive. Mr. Bernier is survived by his wife, Mrs. Eugenie (Roy) Bernier, two sons, Leonard and Maurice Bernier, one sister, Miss Donalda Bernier, and two brothers, Wilfred Bernier of this city and Ulysse of China. H was a member of Private Joseph Francis Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars. The funeral will be heldMonday morning from his home with a solemn high mass of requiem at 9:30 in Notre Dame church. Interment will be in Notre Dame cemetery.
