Biography

John Berney, Esq., son and heir of John Berney, Esq., and Margaret Wentworth,[1] was born about 1510.[2][3] By an inquisition taken 7 November 1528 John, aged 18, was found to be his father's main heir.[4] John may have been born at Reedham, Norfolk, where his father held lands.

John held lands in Reedham and Langley, Norfolk and served as commissioner of sewers for Norfolk.[2]

John married first to Margaret Reade, daughter of William Reade,[1] Gent., of Beccles, Suffolk and Margaret Tooley.[2] They had three sons and five daughters:

His wife, Margaret, died 17 March 1548.[2]

John married second in 1552 to Alice Ferrer, daughter of Robert Ferrer, Esq., and widow of William Sydnor, Esq.[2][3]

John was a legatee in the 1552 will of his brother-in-law, Gregory Hardwarde, Gent. of Reedham.[2]

John died in 1558 or 1559, leaving a will dated 22 July 1553[3] and proved 7 May 1560.[2] In his will, he requested burial at Reedham, Norfolk[2] and appointed his wife, Alice, as executor.[3] He is buried at Reedham in the chapel on the south side of the chancel with both of his wives.[3]

"We know from the will of John Berney of Reedham (d. 1557), that Elizabeth Berney, Ela/Elleyne Berney, and Anne (Berney) Cudon, were all his daughters, and that he had a daughter named Mary. So at some point before 1569 (since Richard Berney mentions "each child of nephew Styles", implying there were at least two by 1571), Mary Berney married Edmund Style of Langley Park (1538-1616)."[5]

Three different sources provide the children of John Berney and Margaret Reade (one being Richardson). I have posted in the soc.medieval group to get clarification on whether or not the children have been established as being correct.

Richardson's MCA obviously cannot be used in full because he made corrections in 2012 after publication.

I got one response which provides more information from Brad Verity on soc.medieval. Being that Reedham, Kirby Bedon and East Winch are so close, I find that there is little to question here, but hopefully a response from Richardson still is possible.

"Yes, this is correct - Thomasine (Sheppard) Barnes is descended from Edward I through her mother.

I was able to locate a few dates: THOMASINE BERNEY, dau of John Berney of Reedham (c.1510-1557, descended from Edward I) & his 1st wife Margaret Reade (d. 1548) married, as his 1st wife, Thomas Osborne of Kirby Bedon, Norfolk (bur. 28 July 1616 St Andrew Church, Kirby Bedon), son of Robert Osborne of Kirby Bedon (d. 1572) & Mary Bendish, and had one daughter:

ELIZABETH OSBORNE, bur. 21 Oct. 1630 St Andrew Church, Kirby Bedon; married 28 April 1590 St Andrew Church, Kirby Bedon, Owen Sheppard of Kirby Bedon (bur. 19 July 1629 St Andrew Church, Kirby Bedon)."
