Edward Roslyn Benton was born on 8th October 1912 at Auckland city in Auckland province, New Zealand. He was the son of Albert Roslyn Benton and his wife Margaret Liddle Johnstone.
On 16th January 1936 Edward married Mary Charlotte Furze in New Zealand, but the couple divorced after the birth of their daughter the following year. In 1947 he married Florence Annie Fitches who had previously been married to Edward Bazel [sic] Stokes.
Edward was killed at the age of 42 on Christmas Eve 1953 … ie, 24th December 1953 … in the Tangiwai Rail Disaster. His wife Florence and all three of their daughters died in the same tragedy. Their last known home address was Ahura Street in Marton in the Manawatu.
