Research Notes

Currently this is the only profile for a Jeremiah Bentley alive between 1759-1841. Possible sources can be found at genealogist Alan Bentley's profile for Jeremiah Bentley It should be noted records have been found for another Jeremiah Bentley alive in Georgia during this Jeremiah's life. There was also a Jeremiah Bentley living in North Carolina in 1740. Jeremiah was born in 1759. The information below says he has military records from 1818-1832. This would have made Jeremiah age 59 to 73, depending on when his service actually took place. More sources are needed for his military service. I do not know the source of the above statement, but it is at least 20 years old and makes no since. Jeremiah entered the continental army on 28 Aug 1777 for 3 years. He was imprisoned aboard ship in Charleston SC until escaping circa May 1781 and upon arriving around July 1st back in Amelia Co VA with no discharge papers, he got in touch with Col._______ Booker (as I recall) and secured them. He then acquired his 100 acres in KY (which he may never have seen). After his death, c1850 Jeremiah's widow Hannah received some acreage in Lawrence Co for his service. There are the records of his pension payments up to his death and then somewhere circa 1856?, there is contact with his son John in AL related is his father's service. CONTINENTAL ARMY PENSION APPS: Southern Campaign American Revolution Pension Statements & Rosters Pension Application of Jeremiah Bentley S39192 Transcribed and annotated by C. Leon Harris To the Honorable the Secretary of the [illegible word] War Department of the United states of America The petition of Jeremiah Bentley, respectfully sheweth, that he is a citizen of the United States in the State of Tennessee. That on the 28 day of August 1777 he enlisted in the county of Amelia, & State ofth Virginia, as a private soldier in the War of the Revolution between the then thirteen United Colonies & Great Britain, for the term of three years on the continental Establishment under a certain Robert Foster, who was either a Lieutenant, or ensign (but your petitioner is not confident which) in a company commanded by Capt James Foster, in the 15 Virginia Reigment, and in General Woodfords [William Woodford’s] Brigade of Continental troops; That on the 14 of January 1788 [sic], he joined Generalth Washingtons army at Valley Forge; at which time, said Capt James Foster being dead [since 15 Nov 1777], your petitioner served under a Capt James Mason (to the best of his recollection) in the Reigment and Brigade above mentioned. That in the Spring of 1789 [sic] he was placed under the command of General Anthony Wayne, and served in a company of light Infantry commanded by Capt Samuel Booker; That he fought in the battle at Stoney Point [Stony Point NY, 16 Jul 1779]; and was at the Seige of Charlestown by the Brittish in 1788 [sic: Siege of Charleston SC, spring 1780]; at which, he was taken prisoner by the enemy [12 May], and kept on board a prison ship for the term of nine months; when he was taken sick, and sent to the Hospital in Charleston, from which he privately escaped on the 9 day of May, at night, inth the year 1781, and return ed to his home in said Amelia County in the state of Virginia. That his term of service for which he had enlisted had expired some time before he made his escape from the enemy as afores’d. in consequence of which he did not again join the army; but some short time afterward he received, in the city of Richmond, in the state of Virginia, from a certain Col William Davis sic: William Davies], by the direction of his said former Captain Samuel Booker, an honorable discharge; which he kept for near twenty years; when thinking it was of no value, he distroyed it; so that he cannot now produce it – your petitioner would further beg leave to state, that after having served under Genl. Wayne as before stated, he was, at Trenton in New Jersey, placed under the command of Capt William Moseley, in the first Virginia Reigment, Woodfords Brigade of Continental troops, in which said company, Reigment & Brigade he served until he was made prisoner as above stated. The most of the persons who knew him in service, are either dead, or live at so remote a distance from your petitioner that he cannot with any convenience procure their testimony; that he is now according to the information of his parents, in the fifty ninth year of his age. That he is very infirm; having his left shoulder dislocated, for thirty odd years ago, so that his arm is nearly useless to him. He is also much afflicted with the piles, so that from his age and infirmity, he is unable to gain a livelihood by his own exertions. That he is very poor, and has a wife who is about two years younger than himself, to maintain. That he stands much in need of assistance for a support from his country. He has received no pension from his country, & his pay was of very little service, being of depreciated money. He hereby relinquishes his claim to every pension by the laws of the United States allowed him, previous to the passage of an act, entitled “an act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary War” passed by the Congress of the United States 9 [sic: 18 ] March 1818, and signed by the President on theth th 21 of the same month. He therefore prays to be placed upon the pension list agreeably to the provisionsst of said act – 4 June 1818 Jeremiah hisXmark Bentleyth [On 5 July 1819 Randolph Vaughn and Sarah Bentley stated that they knew of Bentley’s service. I'm new as the manager of this profile and am planning to clear it up over the next couple of months. Some of the old connections will have some issues because of so much intermingling of like named Bentleys' families that are in error. Jeremiah's proved father is the Samuel Bentley born 30 Dec1719 North Farnham Parish Richmond Co VA Son of Ann/Anne/Anna LNU bc1695 and the Daniel Bentley born c1685 probably VA who dies c1723 probably in Richmond Co VA. Daniel is DNA related to the other Richmond Co Daniel Bentley, a Sr bc1775 who in his 1721 will named son Daniel Jr bc1700 (Sr and Jr were both married to Elizabeths). Samuel Bentley born 1719 moves to Amelia Co c1750 and is regularly confused with the older Samuel Bentley bc1705/10 who is in Amelia Co by c1734 and names his son Efford in his 1784 will. These Bentleys are DNA related, but exactly how is unknown.

At present this profile is a combination of two Jeremiah Bentleys:

One, my GGGgf born 1 MAY 1759 - Am Rev War Vet 28 Aug 1777 - c1 July 1781 - Will 1835 Lawrence Co TN - of the SE VA Bentleys. Wife "Nancy" LNU bc1761 Res c1799 Union Co SC dc1819 TN. (He was not married in1779 Sumner Co TN. - and it didn't exist...) The 6 children named are their children with Lucretia m Luker left out. He is the proved son of the Samuel Bentley born 30 Dec1719 North Farnham Parish Richmond Co VA who was never married to an Elizabeth Younger. Jeremiah did have a brother Daniel Bentley and a brother Samuel Bentley Jr, but not a Jesse Bentley, William Weldon Bentley, James Bentley, John Bentley nor a sister Elizabeth Bentley. He did have sisters Sarah / Sally Bentley bc1760, Ales Bentley Vaughan bc1753, Mary Bentley Allgood b1746 NFPRCoVA and Ann Bentley b1741 NFPRCoVA. Second, the Jeremiah from the NE NC Bentley Family (Bertie/ Edgecomb) - different DNA. Nancy Patton may have been that Jeremiah's wife.
