Biography

Dr. Alexander Willis Bentley was the son of Efford Bentley (a Revolutionary soldier) and living Lawrence County Alabama in 1850. [1]

Lawrence County marriage records indicated a Alexander W Bentley was married twice. First, to Margaret A. Newman on June 11, 1839 and second, to Julia Peters on September 2, 1852. [2] Dr. Bentley's first wife Margaret A. Bentley (born 1817) died on June 27, 1843 (a note in the records state "w/o Dr. Alexander Willis Bentley)and is buried in Courtland graveyard.[3]

An obituary appearing in the Moulton Advertiser newspaper on May 15, 1868 reads[4]:

"Dr. A. W. BENTLY, late of Courtland, in this county, died a few days ago at Petersbury, Tennessee. where he had but lately located. He was a good citizen, a fine physician, a true mason and a devoted Christian"
