Biography

Gaetana Bentivegna, daughter of Don Luciano Carmelo Bentivegna, a tailor, and Paola Canali, is born on 25 February 1852 in her parents' home on via Figurella in Corleone.[1]

She marries Antonino Saporito, son of the late Liborio and living Lucia Saporito, on 3 February 1880. Her parents have passed by this time.[2]

According to the 1930 census, Antonino and his family emigrate in 1880.

Antonino and Gaetana have four known children: two sons named Liborio or "Libolio," the second called Leo (c. 1881-2 and 1882), "Calmeto" (may be Carmelo or Calogero)/Charles (1888), Paul A./Polly (1890), and Mary (c. 1894-1901).

The first son named Liborio is born in New York and dies in infancy on 23 August 1882 in Manhattan.[3]

A second son named Liborio is born 20 October 1882 in Manhattan. Antonino and Gaetana are both thirty years old (b. 1852).[4] He is called Leo.

Lucy is born 10 June 1887 in New York.[5]

On 1 December 1888 in Manhattan, "Calmeto" Saporito is born. He is the son of Antonino Saporito, 33 (b. 1855), and Gaetana Bentivegna Saporito, both born in Italy.[6] He is called Charles or Charley. At his death, his birthdate is reported to be the twenty-first of December.[7]

Paul A., called Polly, is born 2 October 1890 in New Iberia, New Iberia Parish, Louisiana.[8][9]

Mary is born in 1894 in Louisiana, according to the 1910 census and her memorial as photographed on Find A Grave. The state record of her death gives her birthdate as 22 October 1901.[10]

Early in 1902, nephew Giuseppe Piazza emigrates to Abbeville, Louisiana, joining Gaetana and Antonino there.[11]

Lucy marries Frank Emile Giozza.[5]

In the 1910 federal census of Abbeville, Ward 3, Vermilion, LA, A. Saporito, age 58 (b. 1852) born in Italy, heads a household with his wife, Gaetana, age 58 (b. 1852), and children Charlie, 20 (b. 1890), born in NY, Polly, a son, 18 (b. 1892), born in LA, and Mary, 16 (b. 1894), born in LA. Antonio is a merchant with a grocery store.[12]

Death of Gaetana

Gaetana dies in 1916 in Vermilion Parish. She is buried in Saint Mary Magdalen Cemetery in Abbeville, Vermilion Parish, Louisiana.[13]

Leo attends Tulane Medical School and becomes a practicing physician.[14] During World War I, he is a coroner for Vermilion Parish. Charley also serves in the war.[7]

Leo marries Reine Scheren, of New Orleans.[14][15]

In the 1920 federal census, taken 7 February, the family still lives in Ward 3, Abbeville, on Bailey Ave. Antonio is 67, a widower, emigrated in 1879, was naturalized in 1890. He is a retired grocery merchant. Charles, 31, is a bookkeeper for a rice mill. Paul, 29, is a weigher for a rice mill. Mary, 36, is also at home.[16]

Charles is a rice buyer for the Kaplan Rice Mill for over 38 years. He marries Laura Maria Clotiaux.[7]

Polly marries Sedonia Saltzman by around 1925.[8][9]

Around 1927, Polly moves from Abbeville to Alexandria, Rapides Parish, to work at the Republican Rice Mill.[8]

In the 1930 federal census of Abbeville, Vermilion, Louisiana, Anthony Saporito, 78 (b. 1852), born in Italy, lives with his daughter, Mary Saporito, 37 (b. 1893), born in Louisiana. Anthony is a widower. He immigrated in 1880.[17]

Antonio “Anthony” Saporito, born 1852 in Italy, dies 1 September 1935 in Abbeville, Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, at age 83. He is buried in Saint Mary Magdalen Cemetery in Abbeville. He is the widower of Gaetana Bentivegna Saporito and father of Liborio “Leo”, Lucy Saporito Giozza, Calmeto “Charles” Saporito, Paul “Polly”, and Mary.[16][18]

Around 1936, Polly falls ill. He dies in Alexandria on 26 June 1937 at age 46, leaving a wife and three young children.[8][9]

Dr. Leo Saporito dies 13 April 1944 at age 61 in Kaplan, Vermilion Parish, Louisiana. He is buried in Saint Mary Magdalen Cemetery in Abbeville.[14][15]

Mary dies at age 62 on 15 October 1964 in Gueydan, Vermilion, Louisiana.[10]

Charles dies in April 1968 at age 79, also in Kaplan.[7]
