Biography

Don Giliberto Bentivegna, Marquis of Giostra Florence, is born and baptized 5 May 1769 in Corleone, the son of Don Francesco Bentivegna and Donna Eleonora D'Anna.[1] His godparents are Don Giuseppa Acebba Romano and his wife, Francesca, of Palermo. They are represented by Don Giuseppe Maria and Donna Stefania Bentivegna, brother and sister.

Don Giliberto marries at least twice, first to his niece, who is named after Giliberto's mother: Donna Eleonora Bentivegna, daughter of Don Stefano Bentivegna and Donna Girolama la Rocca, on 26 January 1793.

In the 1812 census conducted by the Church of the Citta' of Corleone, the Bentivegna family are the first recorded. The ink is faded and hard to read.

In the rivelo of Don Bernardo Nicolosi dated 30 April 1815, he lists his possessions, including a piece of land in the contrada di San Cristofaro, near the lands of Don Giliberto Bentivegna, and of Salvatore la Rosa.[3]

His father dies in 1814.

Donna Eleonora Bentivegna, wife of Don Giliberto, dies at around age 40 (b. 1777) on 8 April 1817.

Don Giliberto, the widower of Donna Eleonora Bentivegna, remarries to Donna Teresa de Cordova from the Bourbon-Orleans, the daughter of the late Marchese della Giostra Filippo de Cordova Nicosia and Caterina Vanni e Santa Colomba, on 20 December 1818 in the San Giacomo Church in Corleone.[4] Witnesses for the groom are Don Girolamo Gennaro and Don Giovanni Basile.[1]Don Giliberto's name does not appear in the index of Corleone marriages for 1812-32.[5]

Don Giliberto and Donna Teresa have at least nine children: Francesco (1820), Filippo (1823), Eleonora (1824), Carolina (1827), Rosa, (c. 1828), Giuseppa, (c. 1831), Giuseppe (c. 1832), Stefano (c. 1834), and Rosaria (c. 1836).

  • Francesco is born in the 22 hour and baptized on 4 March 1820, named after his paternal grandfather. His godparents are Don Giuseppe Sarzana, represented by the procurator Don Stefano Bentivegna, and Donna Stefania Sarzana, wife of Don Giuseppe.
  • Filippo is the second son, born 3 January 1823.[6]
  • Eleonora Francesca Onofrio Giuseppa is born and baptized on 6 February 1824, named after her paternal grandmother. Her godparents are the same Don Giuseppe and Don Stefania Sarzana, a married couple.
  • Carolina is born and baptized on 24 February 1827. Her godparents are Vincenzo and Calogera Paulvarina, a married couple.
  • Rosa and Giuseppa are known from the 1834 census, the stato delle anime.
  • Giuseppe is born around 1832, based on his age in the 1834 stato delle anime.

The beginning of the 1834 stato delle anime is not labeled as to location, but based on future notations, is on western end of the Strada Grande. The first few pages of families listed are almost all nobility.

The second household appearing in the 1834 stato delle anime is that of Don Giliberto Bentivegna, father of the famous revolutionary brothers. Don Giliberto is reportedly 67 (he is 65); his wife, Donna Teresa, is 35 (b. 1799). The children are Don Francesco, 13 (he is 14), Don Filippo, 12 (he is 11), Eleonora, 10, Caterina, 8 (probably Carolina, who is seven), Rosa, 6 (b. 1828), Giuseppa, 3 (b. 1831), and Giuseppe, 2 (b. 1832).

Based on his reported age at death, Stefano is born around 1834. His baptismal record does not appear in the index for 1827-36. Cascio-10 10:27, 30 November 2016 (EST)

In the 1842 census, the family of Don Giliberto Bentivegna, Juris Doctor, is 72, is the first recorded. It does not appear the family has moved since 1834. Donna Teresa is 45. The children are Francesco, 19, Filippo, 18, Giuseppe, 9, Rosaria, 8 (b. 1834---Maria Rosa is 14), Stefano, 6, and Rosalia, 3 (b. 1839). There are also three servants: Santa, 44, Leoluca, 23 (b. 1819), and Bernardo, 22 (b. 1820).[7]

Although Filippo appears in this census, he is living in exile in Palermo at this time, and does not return until his father's death in 1847.

Francesco's parents originally wanted him to become a priest as the Bentivegna family was very involved with the Roman Catholic Church and regularly donated large sums of money. Francesco became more fascinated, and involved, with his countrymen's aspirations of independence from their Bourbon rulers.

Don Giliberto, despite his family's social standing in Corleone, is not a Bourbon supporter.
