Mary Kate Benson was born in about 1843. She was the daughter of Dr. Charles Benson and Maria Andrews.
She was an artist, and in 1878 was recorded at Bloomsbury in London, England. Mary studied in England under Herkomer and Calderon and in Paris under Lazare. Her sister Charlotte was also a painter. In 1891 she visited Brittany and was based in Quimper.
In the 1901 Ireland Census, Mary Kate Benson (aged 58, single and an Artist) was recorded as the head of the household at house 7 in Burrow, Howth, Dublin. Also in the household was one visitor, and two servants [1].
Mary Kate Benson (aged 68, single and of no occupation) was recorded residing in house 8 in Burrow South (covers all of Burrow Townland in Howth Parish) (Howth, Dublin) in the 1911 Ireland Census. Also in the household were two servants, a Nurse and one visitor [2].
Mary Kate Benson passed away on 21 March 1921 at age 79, having never married, due to Rheumatoid Arthritis of 17 years duration and Exhaustion[3]. Her Will was proved at Dublin to Ralph Hawtrey Rohde Benson, lieutenant-colonel H.M. Army[4]. Effects £1590 17s. 9d. Sealed London 6 May 1921.
