Research Notes

Excerpt from History of My Bennett Ancestors: by Mrs. R. T. Messer (Herma Jarrett) James Hardy Bennett insisted from the time he was a very small boy that he was going to be a preacher. He graduated from Weaverville College, which was a two-year Methodist school that was dropped by them several years ago. He was licensed to preach by the WNC Methodist Conference when he was 19 years old. He served several years as a circuit rider, then asked for time off to complete his education. He got his D. D. from a school in Virginia, I can't recall its name. The conference then asked him to transfer to a conference in the state of Washington to help build up the Methodist church there. He did so, and was then given a large church in Seattle. He served about eight years in that city. Then the conference asked him to move to Salem, Oregon, and work with Billy Sunday for a year to try to carry the state for prohibition. He and Billy spoke all over the state, and their cause carried in the election. He then returned to the N. C. Conference and was made Presiding Elder of the Wilkesboro District. Some years later he moved to a large church in Greensboro. He was here when World War I started. He tried to enter the service as chaplain, but failed to pass the physical exam. So he went to N. Y. on his own and worked with the soldiers under the supervision of the YMCA. After the war, he joined a N. Y. conference and served churches in N. Y. City. At the time of his death, he was pastor of the church to which John D. Rockefeller and family belonged. During his days as circuit rider, he married Jennie Armstrong at Mocksville, N.C. No children ever came to them, so she devoted her whole time to helping him in his work. At his death she brought him back to Mocksville and placed him in her family cemetery.
