Newspaper Report of Death
" Dandenong Papers"
Death in a raging torrent — TONY BENNETT, was just like many nine year- olds, complete with freckles and a cheeky, boyish grin. His greatest love was playing football, barracking for Richmond and riding bikes. And it was while trying to save his mate's bike, which got carried off a small bridge across Dandenong Creek, that Tony fell in himself and drowned. He had left home with a friend to go tad poling in the creek. They took their bikes with them. Tony was a pupil at Dandnong Primary School and played football with St Mary's.
Drowned boy, 9, "had little chance"--- According to Inspector Laurie Hamilton, once Anthony Bennett fell from a bridge and into the Dandenong Creek he had "no chance" of getting out. Inspector Hamilton of Dandenong Police, said; "At his age and height, and with the creek running so fast, he could not have got out. Twenty -two police and volunteers were involved in the search last weekend for Tony -- and men in the creek had to be tied with ropes held by searchers along the banks. Tony was carried from the bridge at about 2.15 pm on Saturday. His body was found six kilometres away at the entrance to the Bangholme Road, drain at 4 pm on Sunday. Tony's parents Shirley and John Bennett had lived in Ronald Street Dandenong for about two years. They have three other children --- Tracey, 12, Debbie, 7, and Craig 3. She said she and her husband John, would like to thank police and volunteers who took part in the rescue attempt.
