Hardiman M Bennett was born in 1770 in Colony of Virginia.
Hardiman died on December 13, 1846 in Haywood County, North Carolina, United States, aged 75.
Hardiman (38) and Permelia Young (15) were married on December 13, 1809 in Buncombe, North Carolina. Permelia was born in 1793 in Pendleton, Anderson County, South Carolina, United States of America. She was the daughter of William Young and Mary (Bryson) Young. Their known children were:
The reason Hardiman Bennett was referred to as Doc was that he and his Son Young Bennett were both known in the Haywood County North Carolina area as Prominent Herb doctors. As told by Cataloochee Historian and Park Ranger Mark Hannah.

(These notes are from a heritage book article written by Carolyn Bennett Mahaffey and her father John Carmine Bennett). The book is "Haywood County Heritage North Carolina Vol 1" by" Haywood County Genealogical Society.
Among the early settlers of Haywood County were Hardiman Bennett and his wife Permelia Young Bennett. Federal census records indicate that Hardiman was born about 1775 in Virginia, but his specific birthplace and parents have not yet been identified. According to family Bible records, Permelia was the daughter of William Young and Mary Bryson Young, both of whom are said to have descended from families which migrated to America in the early 1700's. Mary Bryson's father, William Bryson II, and his 5 brothers were all soldiers and patriots of the American Revolutionary War. These Youngs & Brysons, along with a John and a William Bennett (whose relationship to Hardiman has not yet been proven) obtained several grants of land between 1802 & 1807 at the head of the French Broad River near the convergence of the boundary lines for Georgia, North Carolina & South Carolina. Hardiman & Permelia were married in 1809, most likely in or near this area, originally Buncombe & Transylvania County.
They eventually settled at East Fork Pigeon where they appeared in the 1820 Haywood County census with 7 children. In the 1822 Minutes of the Court Pleas and Quarter Sessions, a Haywood County court ordered a jury " to lay out the way for a wagon road from Hardyman Bennett's on the East Fork of Pigeon River to the main road near William Dever Esq. to pass Col. William Cathey's mill". An entry in 1833 states: "Ordered by the court that John Simmons oversee the public road from the forks of the road below Maj. Dever's old place up the East Fork to Dr. Bennett's, and all the hands subject to work on roads, who live above where Allen Campbell lived on the East Fork and it waters to work under said overseer."
It is not known what sort of doctor this Dr. Bennett was, and whether the reference is to Hardiman. Hardiman & Permelia appeared with their family in the 1830 and 1840 Haywood census records, but Hardiman had apparently died by 1850 as Permelia is shown living with her daughter Frances. Little else is known at this time of Hardiman and Permelia.
Their children's names were Hardiman, Young, John (m.Cynthia Davis), Archibald, Polly (m. Benjamin Wood), Betsy (m. Samuel Wood), Francis (never married), and a son and 3 daughters whose names are not known.
Bennett Gap, on the Haywood Transylvania County line on Pisgah Ridge between Cherry Gap & Green Knob, is believed to have been named for this family, as is the Bennett Branch which rises in southeastern Haywood County and flows northwest into East Fork Pigeon River. Landmarks in Transylvania County believed to be named for the family include the Bennett Gap in the northern part of the county between Looking Glass Creek and Avery Creek, another Bennett Branch, Bennett Knob, and the Bennet Gap Trail. I found this online on other genealogy website entitled Bennett Family of TN, NC, GA and Padgett Family of NC, GA. Owner is Angela L. Padgett, last updated 6 September 2000. I have entered it for the reference to this family and will try to verify her citations.
