Joseph and Mary had eleven children together, the last in 1880, the year Mary died.

Joseph married Ann Jane (Makinson) Benfell (1849-1919) in 1882.

Joseph died on August 8 and was buried on August 11, 1918 in the Northern Cemetery, in Dunedin, Dunedin City, Otago, New Zealand.^{[4] [5][6]}
