James Hervey Bemis was born on September 5, 1837, in Barre, Worcester County, Massachusetts, to Charles Bemis and Laura Hunt Bemis. By 1855, he had relocated to Campbell, Steuben County, New York. Over the years, Bemis established himself in various professions and locations. By 1870, he was residing in Campbell, where he had become a banker. A decade later, in 1880, Bemis had moved to Jefferson, Marion County, Texas, where he ventured into the Mill and Lumber Industry.
By the turn of the century, in 1900, Bemis had settled in Missouri Township, Nevada County, Arkansas, continuing his work in the lumber industry. In 1910, he had moved once again, this time to St. Louis, Missouri, where he worked as a merchant specializing in the lumber trade.
James Hervey Bemis passed away on September 8, 1919, in St. Louis. He was laid to rest at Hope Cemetery in his former hometown of Campbell, Steuben County, New York. Throughout his life, Bemis navigated various careers and locations, leaving behind a legacy marked by his industrious spirit and adaptability.
