Biography

Martha was born in the fall of 1859, to James Belt, a farmer, and Martha Wilkerson.[1] She married James Tandy Jones, also a farmer, in the winter of 1880.[2] They had eight known children:[3] [4]

  • 1882-1909: Charles Jefferson, m. Hattie Cooper, 1901[5]
  • 1885-1909?: daughter SA, probably Sally Anna, who married Will Pryor, 1902[6]
  • 1888-1969: James William, "Buster", m. 1st unknown ("widowed" on 1910 census); m. 2nd Minnie Burton, 1910 (divorced); m. 3rd Lizzie Gregory, 1926; m. 4th Eleanor Biggs, 1932
  • 1891-1936: John B. Wilson, m. Mary Dunn, <1915
  • 1894-1974: Flora Elizabeth, m. 1st Bernice Vernon Frederick, 1911; 2nd Samuel Mont Capshaw[7]
  • 1897-1977: Tandy Lewis, m. Josephine Young, 1921
  • 1901-1996?: Wavy Irene; m. Lerson Roy Steele[8]
  • 1903-1990?: daughter Pearl (Adell?); m. 1st? a Steele, 2nd? Vernon Hammersley, 3rd? a Keen

She was predeceased by their oldest son, Jeff, who died in 1909 at the age of 26 in a boiler explosion at the saw mill where he and his brothers, Jim and Buster, were working.

Their oldest daughter may also have predeceased her parents. There is a record of a Sally Jones marrying a J.W. Pryor in Sumner, Tennessee in 1902, and a 1909 grave for a Sally Pryor, born 1885, in Dry Fork Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery, the same cemetery where James, his parents, and many family members are buried.

James passed away in Nashville, Tennessee in 1931 at the age of 74.[9] He is buried at Dry Fork Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Sumner County, Tennessee.[10] His gravestone reads "Precious Pappy." Mattie died on the same day seventeen years later, and is buried at Spring Hill Cemetery in Nashville.[11] [12]
