James Bell was born on 20 Sep 1850 in Kelvinhaugh, Lanarkshire, Scotland, United Kingdom, son of Robert Bell (1813 - 1878) and Lillias (Kerr) Bell (1817 - 1899).[1]
Jame's family were involved in Calico printing whilst he was young. His father leased the Ruthvenfield Print Works, but declared bankruptcy for about £13,000, a substantial sum in 1863. [2][3]
The family sought a new life in Queensland, Australia arriving in Jul 1865 aboard the ship "Naval Reserve". The ship had a lot of sickness and death aboard during it's journey and was held in quarantine at Dunwich before passengers were allowed to disembark.[4]
James married Emily Alice Catt (1865 - 1891) on 3 May 1882 in Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia.[5]
James married Fanny Eliza Tippett (1873 - 1968) on 20 Nov 1895 in Rockhampton.[6]
James died on 11 Feb 1934 in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia aged 83.[7] James is buried in Pioneer Cemetery, Parap. [8]
