Colonel Sir Maurice Bell, 3rd Baronet CMG TD DL JP was a British soldier. [1]
Born Maurice Hugh Lowthian Bell on 29th March 1871 at England, Bell was the only son of Sir Hugh Bell, 2nd Baronet and his wife Mary née Shield. [2] He was baptised on 22 April 1871 in East Rounton, Yorkshire, England.[3] Bell's mother passed away just weeks following his birth. His older sister was Gertrude Bell CBE. Bell was educated at Eton and in Paris and Germany, [4]
Bell was commissioned in the British Army in 1890. He fought in the Second Boer War (aka South African War) in 1900-01, for which campaign he was awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal. During the First World War, Bell attained the rank of Colonel, being appointed commanding officer of the 4th Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment (Green Howards). He was Mentioned in Despatches on two occasions and in 1916 was appointed Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG). [4] He was awarded the Territorial Decoration (TD). [5] For this latter service he was awarded the 1914-1915 Star. the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal.
Bell held the offices of Deputy Lieutenant (DL) and Justice of the Peace (JP) for the North Riding, Yorkshire. He was appointed High Sheriff of County Durham for 1921-22. [5]
His business interests included being director of Dorman Long and Horden Collieries. [4]
He succeeded his father as the 3rd Baronet Bell, of Rounton Grange, Co. Yorks and Washington Hall, Co. Durham on 29th June 1931. [4][5]
He resided at Mount Grace Priory, Northallerton. [4]
Bell passed away, unmarried, aged 73 years, on 17th November 1944 at Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland. [6] He was buried in East Rounton, Yorkshire, England.[7][8] As he never married or had children, upon his death Bell was succeeded as 4th Baronet by his nephew, Hugh Bell. [4]
