Attn: Descendants of Abraham Belcher (1750-1815) and Rev. Philip Belcher (1800-1875).
SUMMARY
Quite serendipitously, two genetic genealogy researchers independently tested the Y-DNA of two Belcher lines from the US state of Georgia. The testers included a male direct descendant of Abraham Belcher (1750-1815) of Burke County and a male direct descendant of Rev. Philip Belcher (1800-1875) of Georgia and Alabama. Though Abraham and Philip were related by marriage of their descendants, paper trail confirmation of Philip’s lineage was lost in an 1850 Burke County, Georgia courthouse fire.
For years Belcher researchers hypothesized that both Abraham and Philip descended from Edgecombe County, NC Belchers yet evidence has been limited to the paper trail. Y-DNA testing — which scientifically confirms genetic patrilineal bloodlines back thousands to tens of thousands of years — was clearly indicated to solve the mystery. The testing has been completed and results prove that both Abraham and Philip descend from progenitor William Thomas Belcher (1605-1686) who emigrated from Warwickshire England to Isle of Wight, Virginia in 1637.
TESTING
Family Tree DNA performed a Big-Y700, the most comprehensive Y-DNA test available at the time of this report (Dec 2023). The results identified a common Y-DNA haplogroup of I-M253 which is of Scandinavian origin. (In the interest of brevity, please refer to online searches for more information on Y-DNA haplogroup I-M253.) The Big-Y drills down and tests 700 areas along the Y-chromosome assigning a much more specific haplogroup, I-FT108733, to our Belcher branch.
Historically, our parent haplogroup, I-BY64230, formed in approximately 1000 AD. Around 1250 AD a mutation occurred and branched off forming our haplogroup I-FT108733. Per current estimates it is believed the common ancestor of our haplogroup was born around 1650 AD, +/- 100 years. Within the next 200 years I-FT108733 mutated to form I-FT266559. To date we have two Belcher male descendant testers under that (as of now) terminal branch.
It is important to remember that DNA testing is a dynamic process. As additional test results are identified globally, Y-DNA genetic trees become more clearly defined. Increased granularity also means that these specific Belcher haplogroups (I-FT108733 and I-FT266559) may be upgraded to newer haplogroup identifiers.
CONTRIBUTORS
1. Lynne Belcher Burgess RN, the author of this report, sponsored and administers Y-DNA testing for her half-brother, Harry Eugene Belcher. Their kinship is well documented via autosomal DNA testing at AncestryDNA. Their lineage to Rev. Philip Belcher is: Zentie Omar Belcher Jr (1909-1989) > Zentie Omar Belcher Sr. (1873-1952) > Philip Green Belcher (1840-1901) > Rev. Philip Belcher (1800-1875). 2. Rabun Alex Lee, Jr. RPh is an autosomal DNA-verified direct descendant of Abraham Belcher and resides on ancestral lands in Screven County, Georgia. His lineage to Abraham is: Rabun Alexander Lee, Sr (1921-2005) > Dallas Wright Lee (1892-1980) > Martha Sarah Jane Burke (1854-1933) > Simeon Burk (1814-1887) > Martha (Belcher) Burk (1780-1840) > Abraham Belcher (1750-1815). Alex advised and/or sponsored Y-DNA testing/upgrades on several male Belchers to get everyone on the same, most advanced, testing level. He advised A.W. Belcher of Bulloch County, Georgia who is a well documented Abraham descendant. He also sponsored an upgrade to a Big-Y for G. Belcher of California, a McCuen Belcher direct descendant and Harry’s closest Y-DNA match. Finally, Alex sponsored an upgrade for Harry to a Big-Y.
BELCHER YDNA SURNAME STUDY
Family Tree DNA sponsors surname and other genetic group studies. Y-DNA testers can opt to have their results entered into a surname study to help differentiate specific surname lines. Harry Belcher’s kit, sponsored by this author, has been entered into the Belcher Y-DNA Surname Study at Family Tree. A link to the public-facing page is below. To access the spreadsheet select “DNA results”, then “colorized chart”. Harry’s kit (# 979642) is listed under a purple heading of “Henry Belcher Descendants”. (Henry is the father of progenitor William Thomas Belcher.) Rev. Philip Belcher is listed as the earliest known ancestor for Harry’s kit.
Belcher Y-DNA - Overview | FamilyTreeDNA
Please note that our current haplogroup, I-FT108733, is documented with Harry’s kit. As the global genetic Y-DNA tree is refined, any updates to our haplogroup will be documented in that space with his kit.
In closing, we are both very excited to share these Y-DNA results with our Belcher family. How wonderful to finally confirm our Belcher lineage and to have our ancestry well established in the worldwide permanent genetic record. This author would also like to extend a special note of gratitude to Alex for his financial backing to support the best testing possible. As descendants we are forever in his debt for such a noble gesture benefitting our Belcher family legacy.

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.
Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.
