Franklin "Frank" Smith Beistel was born on July 22, 1869 in Mount Pleasant, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, United States to parents Henry Beistel and Nancy Evans. He was the only son out of nine children born to the couple. [1]
Franklin studied at Greenburg, Pennsylvania and attended seminary at Thiel College eventually graduating with a doctorate from Chicago Theological Seminary in 1898. After graduating he returned to Pennsylvania, Jeanette, to minister for about five years.
married Jane "Jennie" Rutherford Caines on October 6, 1903 in Seattle, Washington. [2] He was either studying seminary or had recently graduated by this time because the couple would soon move to Oregon when the church was built. They had several children together including:
"Dr. Frank S. Beistel, 2200 Willamette St., retired minister of the United Lutheran Church in Eugene, died Sept. 1 at his home at the age 80. He had lived in Eugene 22 years.
Dr. Beistel came to Eugene soon after the United Lutheran Church was organized, and was a pastor in Seattle for nine years before that. He spent nearly all his adult life in the ministry.
Born July 22, 1869 in Mt. Pleasant, Penn., Dr. Beistel was the only son in a family of nine children. He took preparatory work at Greenburg, Penn., seminary, and later was graduated from Thiel College, Penn. He then at- fended the Chicago Theological Seminary, finishing there in 1898. He was ordained the same year, and went to Jeannette, Penn. as pastor of the church there for five years.
From Pennsylvania Dr. Beistel went to St. Paul, Minn., became representative for church extension board work, and travelled for two and a half years. He then went to Toledo, Ohio as pastor, and after working as secretary of Thiel College for a time, came to Eugene, Headed Eugene Ministers
The minister was a former president of the Eugene Ministerial Assn., served on the board of directors for the Pacific Theological Seminary in Seattle, and was editor of the Pacific Lutheran, the paper for the Pacific synod of his church.
He married Jennie R. Caines, Oct. 6, 1903 in Seattle, Besides his widow he is survived by the following children: F. Dean, Henry F., Paul R., and Robert E., all of Eugene, Capt. Arthur F. of Salt Lake City, Mrs. Alan R. Holmes, Tacoma, Wash. Mrs, Thomas Bryant, Oak Harbor, Wash., and Miss Janet P. Beistel, Seattle; two sisters, Mrs. Nettle Hayes, Pittsburgh, Penn., and Mrs. John Purkey, Greenburg, Penn.; nine grandchildren; several nieces and nephews."
Services will be announced by Simon-Lounsbury Mortuary.
