Biography

William Beistel was born on March 16, 1837 in Unity Township, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania, United States to parents John Beistel and Mary Fultz.
William worked as a farmer on his family's land[1] before and after marrying Jane Burris Grove on April 12, 1860. [2] They began their family with three sons, John, Lemuel and William Sherman before William served his country in the War Between the States.
He served the United States with Company B of the 28th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers (Infantry) when he enlisted on April 15, 1864 and was subsequently mustered out on July 18, 1865.[3]

After much traveling and hardships for two years, the entire unit was mustered out after the Battle of Gettysburg. [4] He returned home to Jane and the boys and the family continued to grow. Together they had at least nine known children:

William passed away on July 3, 1923 in his hometown of Kregar, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania; [6] his body interred in the neighboring Township of Donegal at Franklin Lutheran Cemetery / Kregar Community Church Cemetery. [7] [8]

"William Beistel, son of John and Mary (Foltz) Beistel, was born March 16, 1837, and adopted as his life-work the calling of a farmer. At the time of the civil war he did not fail to answer to the call to which so many of his brothers responded. He enlisted in Company B, Twenty-eighth Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, the company being commanded by Captain Newmeyer and later by Captain William Armor. They were with General Sherman's army from Chattanooga and Rocky Face Ridge until Atlanta fell, September 2, 1864. They left Atlanta for Savannah, November 15, 1864, arriving there on December 15, and entered the city December 26, after a siege of eleven days.
January 26, 1865, they left. Savannah and marched through the Carolinas to Raleigh, where Sherman received the surrender of Johnston, after which the army marched to Washington, District of Columbia. In poliitcs and religion Mr. Beistel follows the traditions of his family, being a Republican and a member of the Lutheran church.
Mr. Beistel married, April 12, 1860, Jane B. Grove, and their children were: 1. John Edwin, born February 14, 1861, married, August, 1885, Elizabeth Ulery, and has four children: Leroy, Leona Frances. Earl Donald, and Kenneth Charles.

2. Lemon Horner born October 28, 1862, married, July 4, 1892, Malinda Weyant, and has five children: Viola Grace, Minnie Jane, Clarence Edwin, Raymond Charles, and Charles Elmer. 3. William Sherman, born October 28, 1864, married, April 7. 1887, Mary E. Hines, and has four children: Georgie Pearl, Anna Erna, Frank Lemon and John Harvey. 4. Charles Grove, born March 15, 1867, married Ida Krinbrook, and has four children: Ira Russell, Louisa Jane, Eva May and William Glen. 5. Anna Armadilla, born June 15, 1870, married, January 11, 1897, George G. Ulery, and has two children: Lucinda Jane and Freeman Lester. 6. Henry Ambrose, born September 7, 1872, died December 29, 1872. 7. Laura Agnes, born January 31, 1874, died April 5, 1875. 8. Isabella Margaret, born December 20, 1876, married, December 14, 1898, Lawrence Tarr, and has three children: Ethel Jane, Edith Susan and Sarah. 9. Susan Elizabeth, born June 30, 1880, married, December 25, 1899, Thomas W. Berg, and has three children: Howard Eubene, William David and Lloyd Dean. Another member of the family is Ronald Leon, a grandson, born September 5, 1893, and has always made his home with his grandparents. Mrs. Beistel also comes of patriot ancestry. She is the daughter of John and Isabella (Carns) Grove, of Cook township, and her two grandfathers, Jacob Grove and Andrew Carns, served in the war of 1812, while her great-grandfather served seven years in the revolutionary war."
