Genealogical Records

The following section of this profile provides detailed information found in the various cited sources. The purpose of this section is to provide the reader access to the information contained within the cited sources; to identify source data conflicts and identify the origin of data errors; and, finally, to provide a platform to analyze, cross-correlate, and comment on important aspects of the cited historical data record.

Birth Records

  1. ) Barbour New London Vital Records; William {Beebe} Jr. married Jerusha ROGERS on 9 June 1720 in New London, Connecticut. {Editorial note: this marriage date conflicts with the data recorded in the church records. }
    1. ) Jerusha Beebe, daughter of William Jr. and Jerusha was born 12 Mar 1725/26 at New London, Connecticut.
    2. ) Ann Beebe, daughter of William Jr. and Jerusha Beebe was born 3 July 1727 at New London, Connecticut, and died 23 Feb _____.
    3. ) Jabez Beebe, son of William Jr. and Jerusha Beebe was born 18 Sept 1729 at New London, Connecticut.
    4. ) William Beebe (Jr.), son of William and Jerusha was born 19 Sept 1731 at New London, Connecticut.
    5. ) Jeduthan Beebe, son of William and Jerusha was born 10 Sept 1734 at New London, Connecticut.
    6. ) Othneil Beebe, son of William Jr. and Jerusha Beebe was born 23 Jan 1736/7 at New London, Connecticut.

Church Records

  • Primary Source, Connecticut, Church Record Abstracts, 1630-1920, Volume 079 New London, [2] : Data Summary: The following items relating to William Beebe are cited in the New London Church Records:
  1. ) New London Church Records; William Beebe married Jerusha Rogers, both of New London, June 9, 1725. {Editorial, this church marriage record stands in direct conflict with another primary source, The New London Barbour Collection [1], which states the marriage occurred in June 9, 1720. As it is likely Barbour was extracted from this church document, the error is likely a transcription error which slipped into the Barbour record and hence, the information in this church record should take precedence.}

Death Records

  • Primary Source, Connecticut Town Birth Records, pre-1870 (Barbour Collection), New London Vital Records 1646-1854[1]:
  1. ) New London, Conn. VR: Jerusha Beebe daughter of William Jr. and Jerusha died on 25 July 1730 in New London, Connecticut.
    1. ) Ann Beebe daughter of William Jr. and Jerusha died on 23 Feb17?? in New London, Connecticut.

Biographic and Genealogical References

  1. ) Monograph, etc.; Page 18, 19: William Beebe, son of Samuel Beebe was born around 1665 and died about 1750. The Frances Caulkins book[4] is cited as a source identifying Ruth Rogers, daughter of Jonathan Rogers, as the wife of William Beebe and that he became a Sabbatarian Baptist at the Great Neck church. Ruth Rogers was born about 1678, and was still living as of 22 March 1715. {Editorial: she was a joint signatory on a land deed at this date, see below. Can this land deed still be found?} Clarence states that her father, Jonathan Rogers was born in 1655 and deduces that Ruth could not have been of marriageable age prior to 1693 {Editorial marriageable age=15. Clarence is suggesting that Ruth Rogers is too young to be married and cannot be the mother of Wm's oldest children, but offers no explanation}. Clarence offers a list of children and birth order, "by conjecture"; that is to say an educated guess. In particular, Stephen is linked with documentation where Clarence cites Stephen and Mary as signatory witnesses to a deed {Editorial, what is this deed and can it still be found today?} of William and Ruth Beebe 22 March 1715. {Editorial, despite having this documentation linking Stephen and Mary to William and Ruth, Clarence incorrectly assigns Stephen, the husband of Mary Leach, as the son of John in profile (35).} Clarence states that the younger children, Lydia, Ezekiel, and less so, Mary could have been children of Nathaniel Beebe and Elizabeth Wheeler (m. 2 July 1697). Furthermore, Clarence does not know to whom Joseph Beebe was born, stating there is no evidence that Joseph belongs here, except there seems to be no other place for him; unless by highly improbable chance he was the son of John (10). {Editorial Clarence then goes on to list Joseph as a son of both William (in profile 55) and John (in profile 33) anyway. It is now known, with the certainty of primary source documentation support, that Joseph Beebe was the son of James Beebe, and neither William nor John had a son named Joseph. R. Beebe Sept 2017} The names of the children of William and Ruth Beebe, in order of marriage, are: Joseph (55), Samuel (56), Stephen (57), Mary (58), William (59), Ezekial (60), and Lydia (61). {Editorial Note (RRB): Clarence Beebe's genealogical intuition was correct; Joseph Beebe was the son of James, the brother of Samuel Beebe Sr.}
  2. ) Monograph, etc., Page 25: WILLIAM Beebe Jr. (59), son of William Beebe, (19) and Ruth Rogers was born about 1705, and died about 1753-1754. WIlliam married Jerusha Rogers and they were the parents of Jerusha (141), Ann (142), Jabez (143), William {III} (144), Jeduthan (145), and Othaniel (146).
  1. ) Rogers Genealogy; Page 53-54: Jerusha Rogers was the Daughter of James Rogers and Sarah Stevens and a sister to Hannah Rogers who married Ezekiel Beebe. James Rogers (15) was born 1672, in New London; and died July 20, 1721." He was killed by the discharge of a musket set by the Indians to kill a fox. He married 27 Mar 27 1699 Sarah Stevens of Killingworth, Ct.; she died 4 Jan 1752. Sarah was probably the daughter of James and Mary Stevens. James Rogers lived upon the Great Neck, Waterford, having the Poquaoag farm lying eastward of Robin Hood's Bay, “ bounded west on said bay by the clam pond, southerly by a white oak, marked on four sides and a little salt brook that cometh into a little cove by a small piece of marsh, easterly bounded by a swamp and northerly with a fence dividing it from land of James.3 ”
  2. ) Rogers Genealogy; Page 86: 50. Jerusha Rogers was born 15 Jan 1705/6 at New London Ct. Jerusha married, published 9 June 1725, her second cousin William Beebe Jr., son of William and Ruth (Rogers) Beebe: Samuel on 9 Feb 1681/2. They were the parents of the following children:
    1. ) Jerusha, b. 12 Mar 1726; died 1730.
    2. ) Anna, b. 13 July 1727; died young.
    3. ) Jabez, born 18 Sept 1729; married Eunice Newbury.
    4. ) William, born 19 Sept 1731.
    5. ) Jonathan, born 10 Sept 1734; married Lucretia Dayton.
    6. ) Othniel, born 23 Jan 1736; married Joanna Weeks.

She was 6 years old. {Editorial this is likely Wm's first daughter by the name of Mary and this entry establishes her date of birth to be 1709, and date of death to be 22 Jan 1714/5};
  4. ) Hempstead Diary; Page 155. 16 March 1725 I carryed a Bed Tick to Wm Beebees to Weave.; 26 Apr 1725 In the foren I went into ye Neck. I Caryed a Webb of yarn to Wm Beebees to Weave to Make Stephen a Suit, I brot home a Bed-Tick yt he Wove.

Woyat a Single Woman fornication. {Editorial, this entry must refer to be William Sr. because William Sr. was widowed at the time whereas his son William Jr. was married, hence if the complaint was regarding William Jr. the charge would have been adultery. The result of this court hearing may have been a marriage to the woman, very possibly the wife Hannah, mother of Mary cited in his will--timing is just about perfect for the information in the Will of Wm Sr.}
  7. ) Hempstead Diary; Page 391: Wednsd 14 April 1742. ...was out to Wm Beebees to get him to wrok at madm Winthrops.

It also links the place of death to New London.}
  12. ) Hempstead Diary;Page 608, 609: 14 June 1753, I was out to young {Wm} Beebees. the Son of Wm Beebee Surveying for James Rogers ye 3.
  1. ) History of New London: Page 339: "Samuel Beeby, in a deposition of 1708, states his age at seventy seven, and says, "I came to this town nearly sixty' years ago." He died in 1712, leaving a wife, Mary. His former wife was Agnes or Annis, daughter of William Keeny. Whether the children all belonged to the first wife, or should be distributed between the two is doubtful. They were Samuel, William, Nathaniel, Thomas, Jonathan, Agnes, (wife of John Daniels), Ann, (wife of Thomas Crocker,) Susannah, (wife of Aaron Fountain,) Mary, (wife of Richard Tozor.) William Beeby, one of the sons of Samuel, married Ruth, daughter of Jonathan Rogers, and was a member of the Sabbatarian community on the Great Neck. {Editorial: The Great Neck is the Waterford/New London peninsula situated between the Thames and Jordan river. Local references to the region persist even to today--see hyperlinked map}.

Research Notes

  1. ). 2022-07-29: Expunged Phebe Beebe and Mary (Beebe) Jones as daughters of Wm Beebe Jr. No evidence has been found, whatsoever, to support the assertion that the William Beebe of this profile ever had a daughter Phebe or Mary, and these prior assertions are the result of identity conflation and inaccurate placement of these children. Phebe Beebe is the daughter of William and Eleanor Beebe and Mary (Beebe) Jones is the sister of the William Beebe Jr. of this profile, the daughter of his father Wm Beebe Sr. and his third wife Hannah.
  2. ). The following children: Abner, Silas, Mary, Asa S., Phebe, and Ethniel, previously cited in this profile DO NOT appear, as children of Wm and Jerusha Beebe in either the New London Barbour record nor the Clarence Beebe, Monograph, etc book. The New London Barbour collection specifically cites the first born (Jerusha) through the last child (Othneil) as the children of William and Jerusha Beebe. This implies William and Jerusha Beebe lived in New London during their entire child-bearing years, and therefore all of their children should be on this Barbour list--especially a twin of Jerusha as Jerusha was listed on Barbour, but not twin Abner?). Dec 2017--it should be noted that there was a second William Beebe-615, son of Jonathan Beebe, born about 1699 also in New London, and a first cousin to the William Beebe of this profile; hence a contemporary to the William Beebe of this profile, and therefore creating an opportunity for data conflation as noted.
  3. ). 25 Sept 2017: The GED import for this profile noted that Jersusha was the twin sister of an Abner Beebe. Examination of the New London Connecticut Barbour[1] record tabulating the birth and death of Jerusha Beebe DOES NOT contain any reference whatsoever to an Abner Beebe nor of there being a twin to Jerusha, daughter of William and Jerusha (Rogers) Beebe. However, the same Barbour Record does denote that a different Jerusha Beebe, daughter of Samuel and Anne Beebe did have a twin, hence if Jerusha, daughter of William and Jerusha, did have a twin brother, there absolutely would have been a record of this birth in the Barbour record. Hence, Jerusha did not have a twin brother, and references to Abner have been expunged from the biography of this profile.
  4. ). The New London Barbour record does have an Asa Beebe with a 5 June 1732 birth date, but he is explicitly listed as the son of Hezekiah and Hannah Beebe. Asa should be delinked from this profile and merged with Asa Beebe. 2018-03-09 Asa Beebe-1531 was removed as a son of William and merged with Beebe-2552.
  5. ). It 99.99% certain that Ethniel was invented from a name translation distortion of the Name Othneil; a global search for an Ethniel Beebe of this time era in both the Family search and Ancesctry.com sites returns zero results. Therefore, the profile for Ethneil should be modified and merged with that of Othneil.
  6. ). There is a second William Beebe contemporary, and first cousin to the William Beebe of this page who fathered Abner, Silas, Phebe (per the Clarence Beebe "MONOGRAPH etc" book. These profiles have been be transferred to be the children of William Beebe.
