Biography

Louie was born in 1911. At the time of the 1920 census, 7-year-old Louis Thomas was living with his parents and siblings in Deepstep, GA. He was attending school at the time. ^[1] He passed away in 1983. At the time of the 1930 census, 18-year-old Louie was living with his parents and younger siblings in Washington County, GA. He could read and write, and was working as a general farm laborer. ^[2] At the time of the 1940 census, 27-year-old Louie was working as a farm laborer. He was living with his wife, Pearl, and their 9-month-old son, Wayne. They were living on Dyers Creek Road in Northern, GA, next door to Louie's parents. On the other side of his parents' property lived his sister, Mattie, and her family. The highest level of education that he had completed was 5th grade. ^[3] Twenty-nine-year-old Louie registered for the draft on October 16, 1940 at the Tennille School registrar. He put his father as his contact, and wrote that he did not have a phone. He was living in Tennille at the time, and worked for Mrs. H.B. Massey in Sandersville, GA. He signed his name as "L.T. Beckum". According to the registrar, he was about 5'10" tall, with blue eyes, brown hair, and a light complexion, and weighed approximately 130 pounds. ^[4] On May 19, 1945, Louie T. enlisted at Fort McPherson in Atlanta, GA. ^[5] Family lore says that he was set to be deployed from the U.S. to the front, and the war ended just before his train was due to depart. Pearl and L.T. went on to have several other children. L.T. died in 1983, and is buried beside his wife and several of his siblings in Vidalia, GA. ^[6]
