Biography

Jesse Franklin Beckett was born in Liberty, Clay County, Missouri on 8 June 1884. He was the son of James Beckett and Jennie Brogdon. Sometime prior to 1889, Jesse's father James dies and Jennie remarries Charlie Ball on 13 Mar 1889 in Marionville, Lawrence Co. Missouri. The family moves to Davis Township, Pottawatomie, Oklahoma Territory prior to the 1900 census as they are living there July 3rd, 1900.[1]

Jesse marries Ina Lance on 7 Jul 1905 in Shawnee, Pottawatomie, Oklahoma[2]

On 30 Jun 1906, the couple welcomes their first son, Youkle James in Seminole, OK. On the 1907 Statehood census for Oklahoma, Jesse and Ina are living apart. Jesse is living with his Mom, stepfather, step siblings and his brother Charley in Seminole.[3]
On 22 Dec 1907, they welcome their first daughter, Willie Ellen who dies the next year in 1908.
In 1910, Ina and Youkle are living with Ina's parents and Jesse is nowhere to be found. It's rumored that he was a Moonshiner but there's no proof. We currently have no reason or even an idea why Jesse and Ina were not together on the 1907 & 1910 censuses. The family were sharecroppers and moved from farm to farm in the Seminole area. Jesse played fiddle with some of the local bands when he wasn't farming.
In the early 1960s, Jesse and Ina moved into Pioneer Nursing home in Seminole. Jesse had been blind for many years by this time and prior to this move the boys would play jokes on him like moving the clothesline he followed from the house to the outhouse.
Jesse passed away on 6 Jul 1969 at Pioneer Nursing Home, Seminole, Seminole County, Oklahoma. He is buried in Little Cemetery[4] with his wife, Ina, sons Virgil, Youkle & Richmond and grandchildren Phyllis Beckett Hoffman and David Beckett.

Research Notes

5/24/17- Have been unable to locate him in the 1910 census. Ina and Youkle are living with her parents. I have searched the census in every area know family is in and have found nothing. His brother Charlie is living in Clay County, MO with one of their uncles.
I've been told that Youkle and Beulah were named after neighbors but have been unable to verify this.
5/28/17- Looking at the space between Henry and Richmond, I'm led to wonder where Jesse was during this time as you would've expected more children during this time. Did Ina miscarry during this time? Was Jesse perhaps involved in WWI?
