Clarice Marjoribanks Beckett (1887-1935), painter, was born on 21 March 1887 at Casterton, Victoria, daughter of Joseph Clifden Beckett, bank manager, and his wife Elizabeth Kate, née Brown. Her grandfather was John Brown, a Scottish master builder who had designed and built Como House and its gardens in Melbourne.

From the The Age newspaper of Tuesday 9 July 1935 we see her Obituary below:

THE LATE CLARICE BECKETT.
The unlooked-for passing of Clarice Beckett on Saturday last, after a brief illness at a private hospital at Sandring-ham, comes as a shock to the many people who knew and liked her, not only for her work as an artist, but for many other endearing qualities as a woman.
A native-born Australian, she went through a lengthy course of study under Max Meldrum, but, unlike most of the products of that school, turned her at-tention to outdoor painting, varied by occasional studies in still life. Her land-scapes were not of the generally accepted orthodox kind, and it has been suggested that the avoidance of clear definition in her pictures amounted to something of a mannerism, but the fact is that she chose for her painting time the early morning and late afternoon, periods which, particularly in the vicinity of her Beaumaris home, lent themselves to the blurred and edgeless effects which held for her a special charm. An honest and unaffected painter, she found her supreme reward in the doing, accept-ing any material advantages which came her way as a means to an end in further-ing her progress in art.
